He is at the Military Entrance Processing Station. He'll be back when he finishes Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training.

Yeah, an essential rule of communication is to not use jargon that a large portion of your audience is unfamiliar with.

Correct.

MEPS is filled with Assholes as a side note.

Also, why is the S in the title lower cased? Is the Word Station not as worthy as the others?

Ugh, that sucks. Sad

My experience, like most people's, was godawful. Got there at 4:30am, wasn't done til almost 7pm. Most of it was siting and waiting and doing nothing, except for short bursts of being hustled, screamed at, poked, prodded or made to strip/dress/crawl around/etc. Not for all the gold in McDuck's vault would I ever go through it again.

MEPS is step one of hell until you finish Bootcamp.

It's when I learned the famous motto "Hurry up and wait."

Also, I had to show my butthole to a Doctor. I still to this day don't know why.

Question: which was worse? If I had to choose, I'd rather do boot camp again, honestly. (But, I'm not a Marine.)

I'd rather go through Basic again. I can stand to lose a few pounds.

Basic for that reason as well.

It wasn't that bad, I got paid for it, and it put me in great shape. Best shape I had been in my life.

All you had to do was use common sense, and do whatever the RDC's (Recruit Division Commanders, our Drill Instructors) told you to do and it was cake.

Having common sense and physical well being seem to be two thirds of the equation. Whenever discussing the military there is another element.

Call it what you will, team spirit or conformity. That part of the mind that allows some people to be suggestible to ranks of authority which determine right from wrong and dictate their course of action.

I am not saying it is good or bad, I am simply saying my mind doesn't have that required part. I would end up in trouble very quickly, and it wouldn't be due to a lack of ability or common sense. I am very glad that there was no conscription in the US during my lifetime.

Speaking about yourself in the past tense GP? Is there something you want to tell us? Razz

Not listening to that part of your mind can be a difficult thing to overcome. Fortunately, I was never in a position where I was ordered to do anything morally or ethically wrong, it was always more of a matter of whether an order made any sense. I was smart enough to keep my mouth shut until I had enough rank that my politely phrased suggestions were to (somewhat) be taken in to account, but it was definitely a battle.

My unit deployed 10 soldiers to Iraq, and my commander was a Sergeant First Class (E-7) that had an Alabama high school education and could read at about an 8th grade level. He was pretty old fashioned and did the whole eye roll/head shake thing at what the army was doing to stay modern. It was hard to hold my tongue regarding the way he chose to go about things.
