I think this is pretty self explanatory. The one that immediately comes to mind is Mother Love Bone. They never got the chance because the lead singer, Andrew Wood died. They led to the creation of Pearl Jam, as members from PJ and Soundgarden formed Temple Of The Dog as a tribute, before PJ was around.
Love Battery is another one. They were a Psychedelic Grunge band from Seattle in the late 80s to today, although their last studio album was in 1999.
7 Year Bitch was a Grunge/Punk band from Seattle in the early to mid 90s.
There's more that I'll add later. And I promise that I'm not limiting mine to Grunge and Punk.
Wesley Willis probably didn't get paid enough, does that count?

Lordi.
They got a lot of attention when their song "Hard Rock Hallelujah" won Eurovision 2006, but they never managed to break it big, at least not in America.
Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray and Hammerfall should have been huge in the mid to late 90's. They were perfectly poised to carry the flag of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.
There are a lot of what if's in life Donny. What if I hit you really hard in the face, knocked yo shit to the back of yo skull? What if I....had you girl gargle my nuts? The fact remains, you are a fuckin mutant.

The Rugburns.
A San Diego based band in the mid 90s. They had a very unique style and the lead singer/song writing Steve Poltz is a mad genius.
Also, look up "Dick's Automotive" which is epic. (For some reason my work's webfliter blocks any links to it.)
They only have two real claims to fame.
Their song "Suburbia" was featured in the movie "BioDome". And, Steve Poltz dated a young unknown musician who lived in her van from Alaska, who went by the name Jewel. He wrote the song "You Were Meant For Me" as a gift for her.

Say Anything
I made a thread about them awhile back but no one cared so I deleted it. But this band is so hilarious and awesome. It's the epitome of angst and sarcasm. The frontman is a bipolar Jewish guy who writes about his life....however, I guess he's had a lot of issues with the bipolar thing so they don't really have much material. They've had three albums now, and they are incredible. I think every song on ...Is A Real Boy/Was A Real Boy is gold. Here are a few of my favorite songs:
Ok, that's only four of their songs. I highly recommend you look up more!!

Zilch. This is mostly wishful thinking on my part 8D This group was supposed to be the gateway for other Japanese artists to start promoting themselves in the US. The singer, hide (pronounced hee-day), was from a group called X Japan, who some of you sharp-eyed viewers might have noticed did the closing song for Saw IV, called "I.V." (among other things. I'm looking at their wiki now and apparently they've had a lot of activities in the US in the last couple years). The rest of Zilch was white, mostly to help "ease" people in to having an asian singer. Unfortunately, hide committed suicide in 1998 before their first album was even released, and consequently Zilch died before they really got anywhere on their plans to break in to the US market. It took 10 years before any Japanese artists tried again.

I love X Japan. I thought Hide was doing a risky technique to relieve shoulder and neck pain and accidentally hanged himself because he was drunk. Apparently, it's a legit technique, but it's dangerous to do. I could be wrong, though.

The prevailing theory I've heard was that he accidentally hung himself attempting some autoerotic asphyxiation, which sounds possible seeing as he was drunk, in his underwear, and "hung" himself with a towel on the handle of his bathroom door. However, "accidentally hung himself while attempting a new way of whacking it" would sound awful on a death certificate, and so his death was deemed a suicide.
This is the first I've heard of him trying to relieve back and neck pain, though I suppose it's not impossible.
