A United Nations report said Friday that disconnecting people from the internet is a human rights violation and against international law.

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/06/internet-a-human-right/
http://documents.latimes.com/un-report-internet-rights/

What I find interesting is that disconnecting the internet is a human rights violation, yet restricting it to government approved sites doesn't seem to be.

I think it's not so much that internet is necessary to live, it's that they are withholding it from them purposely and maliciously. It could be applied to anything.

Internet = information = the right to know what your government is doing.

I don't think that the Internet is a human right. Not at all. But to rule it out forever? That's also absurd.

Yeah, internet access isn't a human right. Not being raped is a human right. Not watching every you know being murdered in assembly line fashion is a human right. The internet? Not so much.

I just want to be clear. This isn't a debate over whether the internet will become a "human right" or not. I was posting that the UN has declared the internet to be a human right.

I personally can't agree to censored or site specific bandwidth controlled internet being a human right, however, the UN wrote this up.

I do think that the internet will eventually become necessary and denial of it would severely hinder the acceleration of progress within humanity. I'm not sure if it is a good idea for society to move so quickly with technological progress, however, it does seem that if half the world moves ahead by 1000% and some countries are denied the tool that allows that, it would ultimately hinder their ability to ever catch up or maintain what is considered healthy human society.

Apparently nobody caught my equation.

It's not "The internet is a basic human right", at least as far as I can see. You have the right to express your ideas freely. The government shutting down a country's internet services because they don't want people living in their country to tell people living outside it what's happening there violates the rights of the people living in the country.

It's not the inalienable right to update your Facebook.

Here's a better version: Internet = information = the right to think you know what your government is doing. Seriously, if Arab Spring and Greek/EU Summer turn into a US Autumn, watch what happens.

Greece is having continual protests, strikes and other events that are more or less being kept on a blackout condition in the US as a result of the IMF monetary bailout that's imposing austerity protocols and causing the country's infrastructure to rapidly transition to foreign proxy ownership. It's likely (50/50, as several major socioeconomic sources) that Greece will default on their IMF bailout conditions and the emergency funds floated to them, thereby pulling the already precarious eurozone down even further. Iceland already stated it won't put any money towards Greece, and Germany is one of the next likely ones. Also, there's strikes/riots in Spain/Portugal as well, from what I understand. Not sure on Ireland, but maybe Aloywishus can shed some light on that?

Yeah, I know that the EU was hesitant to admit Greece because of its economy, but I thought it was getting better?

No, it's really getting worse, and with the IMF's SAPs that they're imposing on people, it's very likely they'll be raising taxes on the populace, who's already cheezed off as it is.

May you live in interesting times.

Looks like Greece is in some hot water then. I mean, if they're bailing on their bail-outs, they really don't deserve more bail-outs from the community. I don't blame Iceland for pulling support. I'm not sure what can be done to help the economy tho, cause it's kinda been sucking for them for a long time now.
