I just got back from this.
This film resembles a rebooted franchise except they didn't really recast everybody. It follows some of the logic of the previous one since Jack was last scene sailing out in open water looking for the Fountain of Youth.
One of the first things you'll notice is that a lot of the cast of the original 3 films are missing. This is primarily Pintel and Ragetti and other crewman we've come to recognize on site. It is not directly explained what happens to them.
I'm sure most of us expected this from the film since we really didn't think there would ever be a 4th movie.
I'll let more people chime in as they see it. At the time of this posting people who intend to see it are probably at the theater or plan to hit the 9 o'clock.
Go early

I think I like the idea of this movie in principle. The original movie was primarily a Jack movie, and then things spiraled out of control as they tried to give equitable screen time to Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and a variety of other characters. This time around, there's no more crappy Will/Elizabeth drama, which means a slimmer, more streamlined movie, which is a good thing. Pirates 3 was a fucking clusterfuck. Pirates 2 was okay, except it didn't have a proper ending. Someone needs to explain to the fuckheads in Hollywood that just because Back To The Future and BTTF2 ended on cliffhangers doesn't mean that it's okay for other movies to do so.

Yeah, I don't necessarily dislike Orlando Bloom but I definitely dislike Keira Knightley. She's got the weird underbite British face thing that annoys me, not to mention she's a dreadful actress.

Hey, she could have been a lot worse. I at least was under the impression she was from Britain, and that's a success in my book.
On another note, like Syd said, now that the Will/Elizabeth shit is over, it'll be easier to watch.

The original movie was supposed to be a Will/Elizabeth movie, actually. Sparrow was supposed to be the loveable yet cowardly rogue sidekick. But Johnny Depp just kind of completely stole the film. Which is good, because he made the movie, but it does mean you have a bunch of extra people around who were supposed to be main characters, but are just kind of boring things up while Depp and Rush chew the scenery.
Honestly, the reason I want to see the new one is -because- they dropped them.

I have to agree with the consensus that the original trilogy got worse as time went on. The first film was pretty good, but by the second movie, it's like it got ADD, and it along with the 3rd movie became about who was going to screw who over, alliances worked for all of 5 minutes, before too screwed each other over. I had no fucking idea what was going on in the third movie, and this is a movie made for kids!
I might check this out, although I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, if it's anything like the original, I might like it.

I liked all three movies, actually. The second one was kind of a clusterfuck and was clearly made just to set up the third one so it kind of doesn't stand well on its own. I had no problem following the third one. I thought it was pretty interesting, actually.
All that said, the movies were supposed to be about Will and Elizabeth, with Jack just accidentally stumbling into a love story. Still, they knew who audiences were coming to see, even though they knew who the movies were supposed to be about. So, they kind of had to give each of them equal time, which made things difficult...
The second one also lost points with me because of all the forced jokes. Shut up about the rum already.

I just think of the climaxes of the three movies.
The first one is one of the best endings to a film that I've seen. The fight between Jack and Barbossa is awesome, yet simple, with the changes from human to skeleton form as they battle through the moonbeams. The other stuff going on is pretty cool too. It also features a clever end to the fight.
The second one...the waterwheel of doom is just SO fucking stupid. I like to imagine that when the other characters stare at it when it rolls by, they're thinking the same thing.
As for the third one, I don't know. It's awesome and epic and stuff, but I just get the feeling they were trying too hard. Everything just seemed...I dunno. Forced. In your face. Not subtle.

As much as I hate the kraken, it really got to me in the third when they showed it dead on a beach. Kind of hit the message home that the mystic world the pirates belonged in was dying. That having been said, I really liked all three movies. I don't find it hard to follow plot stuff like that, oddly enough.
I still hated Elizabeth and Will. God, they were annoying.

i thought the fourth one was the best sequel yet, but i still like the first one the most (i personally celebrate the ENTIRE COLLECTION). The focus is a lot more on jack instead of a pretty lame love story, and I think we can all be happy about that
i was also a big fan of the mermaid romance sub-plot, as gay as that may sound

Planning on seeing this, but am at the same time reluctant. I liked the first one, second one was alright, fell asleep through the third... if somebody can refresh me on what happened in the last film, that'd be great.

I've only seen as far as 2 and no further. Mainly because I was pretty pissed that Disney had the audacity to give us a movie that doesn't resolve a single fucking plot point and is solely there to make you see three. Like I know you have every intention on making sequel after sequel regardless of whether I go see them, but can you at least pretend there's some sort of ending to something that happened in the movie I just watched instead of giving me three narratives that get no resolution what so ever?

Jack lived, everyone betrayed each other twenty times, and the bad guys die.

I'm the only one who enjoyed the second movie most. I liked the ending. I don't care if it doesn't "end". I fell asleep durieng the third movie. my God that battle in the whirpool was long.
This one is pretty good actually. There are pirates, sword fights, pirate talk and Captain Barbossa. Too bad Penelope Cruz is in there. IMDB says that this will hopefully be the first one of a trilogy. And yes, the mermaid story WAS gay and unnesessary
Some spoilers here
[SPOILER:c95bd3f9a0] Everyone lived, so the next [possible] movies will have a lot of story for the "other" characters and Sparrow will lose screen time, just like we hate[/SPOILER:c95bd3f9a0]

I liked the second best too.
With the first one i was a little too skeptic to enjoy it fully. It needed time, so the second hooked me. Now i'am cool with all three movies.

I really liked the Pirates trilogy and just saw the 4th one last night with some friends (Yay, free passes!). I'm not gonna say it was the best movie EVER, but it was a lot better than I expected. Kind of got off to a slow start, but by the end of it I can honestly say it was a solid follow-up to the original trilogy.
[SPOILER:91a01cbe7f]By the end of it, the first thing I said to my buddies was: Congratulations, Disney, you have officially made mermaids creepy...[/SPOILER:91a01cbe7f]
