Schofield and like-minded advocates who call themselves "intactivists" seek to make it "unlawful to circumcise, excise, cut, or mutilate the whole or any part of the foreskin, testicles, or penis" of anyone 17 or younger in San Francisco.

In some families, it's a cultural or religious tradition, or parents want sons to look like their fathers. Other parents decry it as mutilation. Medical evidence has shown mixed risks and benefits. Apart from the San Francisco proposal, circumcisions are under scientific scrutiny.

this is weird. lots of kids get circumcised (honestly, i dont know how it all got started) so, its just weird to try to ban them.

I've a feeling this topic is going to get a bit weird quickly, what if the majority of users here being male.

However i don't see the problem. They can do it if they want. I don't really see why people get circumsized anyway.

The majority of me is male, and the only argument I've seen against circumcision is that it mitigates sexual pleasure for the man.

i mean they already banned happy meals. they already banned cat declawing. (or were they just talking about it? i cant remember) i dont see why they would not ban circumcisions.

As one of the few men in the world who can say that I have been circumsized twice, I feel highly discriminated against.

Not just Jews, but a lot of Muslims also get it done, as well as some Christian groups. I'm not sure if it's an automatic procedure, but I'm pretty sure most US born guys within the last 30 years have had it done. I really have no complaints and from most studies, it really shows there's little to no change in sexual pleasure or anything like that. I guess you could make the argument either way, but I honestly couldn't care less.

This. Any time religion is attached, especially in a super blue state like California, you might as well just give up trying to pass anything. They may be able to ban it for non-religious people, but not for religious reasons since that goes against the Constitution.

I was Circumcised at Birth and it wasn't for any religious reason. I honestly don't know why my parents did it. Probably because that's just what most US Males have.

Any porn or medical photos you see coming from the US, and most have it done.

I have never looked into the pros/cons but as far as I know, my Penis works just fine, and sex feels just fine. Unless Ignorance has been bliss to me so far.

But I think I heard or read somewhere that there is a lower chance of contracting HIV? Any truth to that? Not that I'd run out and test it anyway, but I think I remember hearing a news story coming from Africa saying they were getting Males done over there for that reason.

I think it's done now for medical reasons. I guess there's a risk of dirt getting caught in the foreskin and if not washed properly, it could cause infection. At least that's the explination I've carried around all my life.

I don't get this.

From my knowledge of circumcision basically all American males get circumcised.

I am not circumcised and to be honest i don't see what difference being circumcised would make.

The dirt and infection stuff isn't really justified because you just wash it. By that reasoning the only reason males in the US get circumcised is because they are too lazy to wash their dick. Also dirt doesn't really get stuck under your foreskin. Say i didn't shower for a week my dick wouldn't like fall off or become infected or anything. It's like getting dirt on any part of your body.

In fact you would probably be more likely to get infected if you were circumcised because dirt can enter your urethra easier.

Like i understand it for religious reasons but not everyone is religious and it gets done anyway. Why?

Yeah, I was circumcized as a baby, but my foreskin grew back. It unfortunately grew back poorly as some sort of bizarre zombie foreskin that refused to grow at the same rate as the rest of my penis, leaving my shaft in a state of being slowly choked to death. So, given the choice of going under the knife again or having my dick die on me, I got recircumsized.
