AP – Wed, May 4, 2011
The body of a man with his hands and feet nailed to a wooden cross and a crown of thorns on his head has been found in an abandoned stone quarry, South Korean police said Wednesday.
A man wearing only underwear, with a wound on the side of his torso and nylon strings tied around his neck, arms and stomach, was found crucified Sunday in Mungyong, about 115 miles (190 kilometers) southeast of Seoul, said Chung Ji-chun, chief of the violent crime section at Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency.
Two smaller crosses were erected on each side of the cross he was nailed to, Chung said.
Police also found nails, a hammer, an electric drill, pieces of wood and instructions on how to build crosses inside a tent near the scene, Chung said. An SUV belonging to the dead man was found nearby.
Police are waiting for a forensic report to determine the exact time and cause of the man's death and whether it was a homicide or suicide.
Chung identified the man as a 58-year old surnamed Kim.
Popular representations of the death of Jesus Christ depict him crucified between the crosses of two thieves, wearing a crown of thorns, a white cloth over his loins, with a wound on his side from a Roman soldier's spear. |
Wow...how could this be a suicide?

My thought exactly. "Let's see... just nail this here and here, and nail my ONE HAND REMAINING TO THE POST AS WELL"

He had a very, VERY bad case of stigmata and just kind of slipped over the nails?

I'm no forensic expert or anything but I imagine it would be fairly difficult to nail and tie oneself to an erected cross, for the very same reason that our good friend Drew pointed out. Luckily it sounds like professionals are on the job so South Koreans can sleep easy at night knowing they're protected by a diligent and through police force.

No they didn't, if they did there would have been two thieves nailed up there too, slacker!
In all seriousness I hear it's an awful way to die, what a shame.

this is nuts. im still dumbfounded as to why suicide would even be considered an option.
the sheer mechanics are just crazy for one person to do it, and im sure he would probably pass out due to the pain or the bleeding before he even finished

Bah, bet me to suggesting this. I think it was an assisted suicide. A bizarre one.

That's like saying he had the surname Smith. Seriously, damn near every fourth person in Korea has the surname Kim.
They also have an insanely high percentage of Christians compared to the population of the country. I think it's definitely higher than the percentage here.
They also have the highest suicide rate in the world. Japan has a much larger population so while their suicide rate is lower than Korea, more people are killing themselves in Japan than Korea. Still, Korea's rate of suicide compared to their population is the highest in the world. It seems to be a mix of two things: the country looks down on depression, so anyone who is depressed cannot get help without being viewed with scorn and considered "crazy", and their economy is in the toilet.
Teehee wow look at my mini culture lesson there.
That said, this is kinda freakin crazy.

Hahahahaha
The suicide angle, while I suppose valid, reminds me of that joke about the cops finding a guy who was shot multiple times, stabbed multiple times and thrown in the river in a suitcase, "Worst case of suicide I've ever seen."

I was ever given the death penalty, I would demand crucifixion, even though it's Constitutionally dubious that it would ever be allowed to happen, due to that whole "cruel and unusual" thing.
But if it was allowed, they'd have to make it as uncruel as possible and offer me snacks and shit while I was up there. And think of the media coverage! That would be awesome.

I don't know man, I'm betting people would call it more cruel if they gave you snacks and kept you hydrated up there, takes even longer to die and in terrible pain the whole way...
And again on the suicide angle: Even if he did drill his own hands and (I'm assuming) feet, how did he then manage to climb up there, bleeding profusely and with damaged muscles, tendons, bones, etc?

I have a buddy that won't consider teaching in south korea because he says there are too many crazy Christians over there. So maybe some extremist group did it to a lucky chosen member.

there. educate yourself.
On a semi related topic. Korean dudes are hot.

One of my friends and her husband moved to South Korea about a year ago, because he took a teaching job there. Judging from Facebook, they seem to enjoy it over there well enough.
