Every year, the democrats at my college do a tribute to the soldiers who fought and died in the war in Iraq, as well as Afghanistan. They've done this since the war began.

In an open field in the middle of campus, they plant a small flag for every single soldier who died, and then, facing that field, each soldier's name, age, and rank are read off. Every single one. The tribute goes on as long as it needs to to read every name. The readers go in shifts, because the tribute now takes over a week to finish.

These are just some photos of the field I snapped with my cell phone. If I can find it, I might take my digital camera later this week to get better photos.

According to the tribute, we're up to 5,974 troops who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Here's the stand where they're reading. They have a podium and two speakers so they can be heard across the field.

I'm not a particularly patriotic person but each time they do this I find it very moving. I also find it incredibly distressing how much the number of flags has grown each year. Crying

Just something I wanted to share.

A friend of mine from high school named Josh Dingler was killed in Iraq in 2005 while I was going through basic training. Every time I see things like this I think about him.

Part of me thinks that tributes like this are really, really super awesome. Then the other, cynical part of me goes, 'but they only really matter to people who would give a shit anyway.'

But, I suppose its for that segment of the population that things like this are done. Regardless, it's touching and humbling that people invest the time to make this happen.

I was walking through Arlington Cemetery this weekend(I live practically next door) and thought to myself how much this place has changed. Just a few years ago, there was an empty field leading up to the Arlington Blvd that now is full of little white plot markers. It happened so gradual that I never noticed and then one day, it just hit me in the face.

I can't help but think of the ending line from Fallout 3 and NV. War never changes.

No, I don't think I will fuck Stummies.

It matters to remind people that they live in a world that is protected by others, and they should at least stop and be thankful for the freedoms they enjoy at the expense of those who have crossed over to Valhalla.
