I tried the game after reading Syd's review of Super Punch-Out about a month ago.
I'm trying it on an emulator, but I don't cheat (no save-states).
I'm now on the World Circuit. I sometimes beat Soda Popinski, but then I get beaten by Bald Bull. I'll beat them sometime.
At first, I was really bad at this game. Beating Glass Joe at the end or round three is not good. Waiting a minute to punch him didn't help. He blocked all my punches cause I didn't know I could press up to punch him on the face and I thought I had to counter him to beat him. My first loss was against Piston Honda (didn't know how to block).
The character intros are quite good and King Hippo's one is really funny. Super Punch-Out doesn't have that (I downloaded it too).
Also, the trash talk makes very memorable quotes and are what makes the boxer's personnality. You should easily know who said these ones:
" My jaw! Don't hit my jaw! "
" My barber didn't know when to quit... do you? "
" I drink to prepare for a fight. Tonight I am very prepared! "
Note : Soda Popinski was originally called Vodka Drunkenski. Personnally I'm happy the name was changed.

Sounds like you're playing the wrong game. That's Punch-Out, not Super Punch-Out. How the hell could you mix the two up?
Actually, this entire thing is full of factual inaccuracies and holes. Since when was King Hippo in Super Punch-Out, let alone sans his "special intro"?
ARE YOU ON DRUGS???

actually, punch out and super punch out wer eboth originally arcade games, and they had the old NES graphics. they were essentially the same game with some differnet people. these games had a wireframe model as your character, similar to the SNES super punch out, and your character was a queer with green hair, so those Omg little mac in the SNES punch out IS NOT LITTLE MAC!!!!!1one are invalid. Whats most important to note about this is that the characters were all mixed up from what we are used to on the NES and SNES. so it's entirely possible taht king hippo was in the arcadde super punch out.
punch out was ported to nintendo, the characters were moved around AGAIN, and mike tyson was slapped on it. the graphics were dumbed down considerably, giving you the "tiny protagonist vs the gigantic opponents" look that most people are nostalgic about. also noticable is the fact taht vodka drunkenski is the same color as a pink crayon in this game.
super punch out came out later for the SNES later and used SOME of the earlier characters, and made up a whole bunch of shitty new ones.

oh yeah, when you fight bald bull, you get an instant knockdown if you punch him when he does his bull charge, RIGHT BEFORE he hits you.

King Hippo isn't the arcde Punch-Outs either.
Punch-Out had six opponents:
1) Glass Joe
2) Piston Hurricane
3) Bald Bull
4) Kid Quick
5) Pizza Pasta
6) Mr. Sandman
Super Punch-Out had five:
1) Bear Hugger
2) Dragon Chan
3) Vodka Drunkinski (aka Soda Popinski)
4) Great Tiger
5) Super Macho Man
Piston Hurricane is NOT Piston Honda. He looks like Sandman Jr.

He's playing the Japanese NES Punch-Out I'm guessing. He knows he's not playing Super Punch out, because the title of the thread is Punch-Out, it was just the Super Punch out article that made him go play the better game.

Sorry, my post was messed up. I should at least have mentioned Punch-Out in it. But I also said I downloaded Super Punch-Out too, so...

super punch out was just as good as the NES one. the only reason people hate on it is because of the different characters.

I had fun with Super Punch-Out. I like it better than the original, to be quite honest. The rapid-hit super, as well as the fact that if you're doing well, you get to do super punches infinitely, is prefferable to the shitty star system in Punch-Out.
