Does anyone remember listening to rap music and think it was art? It was, at one point. The shit they play now is... uggh... almost music. I remember Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, The Snoop D O double G, Coolio, Ice Cube, Run DMC... ....you know real rap artists (run dmc was a group consisting of some of the artists above). Now the music is just playing a random beat with a stupid phrase repeated. i.e. Black and Yellow.

I remember when a songs made sense and rhymed. It was almost like they had a message. I think that message got lost long ago.

I always thought rap derived from the word rhapsody. Which was utilized in most of the rap songs of the '90s. Rappers now a day lack class and style. They'll rap about whatever they can rhyme, then just come up with a random name that rhymes easily for a choirst.

ok, why can't i vote that rap is art? Music = Art, no matter what your opinion is. It is one of the Arts, like painting, literature, acting. filming. Those are arts and music is one of them.

Please stop hurting life with polls like this.

Admittedly, it is a matter of personal taste, but at least the poll could be designed so it didn't just skew to the pollster's personal preference or inanity. A yes option, for example, would be great.

Rap is most certainly art. I personally don't like it, but it is art.

What is the point of this being a poll? You omitted the option that rap is art and therefore won't be able to draw any conclusions from it.

I can't see the circles to click on any of these poles.

And if rap isn't art then poetry isn't art.

That was my contention. It's meaningless and spam-y. If Robert Rauschemburg can piss in a jar with a crucifix in it (edit: and call it art), I'm pretty sure that Straight Out of Compton can be considered artistic. Anyhow, I shouldn't dignify this Fox News poll with any further contributions.

I wasn't really trying to draw any conclusion from this. Just personally preference. If you all say rap is music and therefore art that's ok. I was just wondering if the music that the artists create has any true artistic value.

The difference between art and true art is the message it brings (IMO). There is a painting called Bird Shit. It's a painting that looks like 50 birds shit on it. That is still art. Maybe art isn't the right word but, rap had something that it lost. I wanted to know if anyone agrees with that.

I'm not a decisive person that is why the poll makes no sense. But if you think rap is art click IDC option I guess.

Rap changed? Partly yes. What mainstream is has changed but there are still rappers doing it old school or golden era.

Strange topic, as 2010 was exceptionally good year for rap. People were heavily getting back to soul-loops and other stuff from the 90s, that made me fall in love to this music in the first place. 2010 is the new 94. Smile

Some 2010-2011 favorites:

Shad - Rose Garden
Dâm-Funk - Hood Pass Intact feat. MC Eiht
Freddie Gibbs - The Ghetto
Pharoae Monch - Clap
Dj Quick - Luv of My Live
yU - Thought About It
Joel Ortiz - Battle Cry
John Regan: One Day in Heaven ft. Skyzoo & Jaiden
Deams ft. Cinnamon Brown - Lemonade
Gotham Green & Quickie Mart ft. El Prez 'LA To JFK'
DJ Muggs vs Ill Bill - Chase Manhattan (Feat. Raekwon)

Retards Attempting Poetry hurr, Punk is Dead, Metal sold out, Country has sucked since Johnny Cash... all I listen to is Polynesian aboriginal men making raspberries into toilet paper tubes. You know, real music for true music lovers.

If you don't think that rap can be art, you're not listening to good rap.

All rap is music. All music is art. Ergo, all rap is art. Not all of it is good art though. And something can be good art without you liking it.

Cubism is regarded as an important movement in art. But I fucking hate it.

And you wanna hear stupid shit? Listen to a lot of early rock.

Don't try to fucking tell me "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" or "Jailhouse Rock" or "Rock Around The Clock" has something meaningful to say. They don't.

Hey now, rocking around the clock is a Hallowed American Institution, and paved the way for greater things, such as rock and rolling all night, and partying every day!

I used to rock 'n roll all night, and party every day. Then it was every other day. Now I'm lucky if I can find half an hour a week in which to get funky.
