So I went to the mall the other day and I happened to go inside the Bose store.
I am a HUGE fan of Bose products. If you want my opinion, they have the best stereo/audio equipment hands down. As I was playing with the wave systems and plugging my iPhone into all of the iPod docks they had hooked up, one of the salesmen walked up to me and started to tell me about this TV that Bose just came out with. Now of course when most people hear the name Bose, they think sound, speakers, headphones, etc. I looked at the salesman with a puzzled look, and i said, "Bose has a TV? I must see this." He then walks me over to this little room where they have a couch and ONE tv hooked up. Underneath the TV, there is one small reciever with a few wires coming out of it, and a blu-ray player. I proceed to sit on the couch and the salesman turns on the tv and begins to play this action-packed scene from a nicholas cage movie, Bangkok Dangerous I believe. Sound fills the room. Bass is shaking the walls and floor. Squeals are echoing around the room from the cars racing around the town. I am in shock and awe. As the movie clip ends, I stand up and search the cieling and walls for any sign of hidden speakers or trickery. As it turns out, all of this amazing sound is coming from the back of the TV.
Now, I own a 1000W 5.1 home theater system with a external powered sub. This system sounds like about 3 of my stereos put together and shot up with steroids.
The quality of surround sound that this pretty much two piece setup puts out is just baffling. I wouldn't believe that this one tv could push the limits and obliterate what I know as a "Home theater" setup if I had not experienced it in person.
Here is a link if you guys wanna check it out.

I really don't care about sound when I watch movies. I really, really don't. I probably would if I could afford it though.

I have about 200 other things I could spend $5500 on, but if I just so happened to somehow have an extra $5500. Then yes. I would buy one of these.

So... the guy who buys things like this in the office seemed interested. I doubt he'll get it unless I can come up with a use case, but we'll see.

Use case: for those biology classes (assuming you work at a school with a full course catalog) where they play Planet Earth so you can get the full effect and be completely emerssed in the environment

QFT.
I remember back when I was a kid, you went to the local Gas Station and got this Card with a bunch of numbers on it.
The for one night a station had like 4 or 5 shows where when some action happened, a number would show up in the corner of the screen, you scratched that number and sniffed.
It was cool as a Kid at least.

Saying that Bose makes the best audio equipment is like saying that Olive Garden makes the finest authentic Italian cuisine in the world.

I bet I could make movies and music sound better than that in your living room with, say, a grand. I'm sceptical of it sounding very good, because speakers crammed up inside tv just come with so many limitations: they're small (sounds weak) and they're in a fixed position (speaker placement is important, and varies from one room to another). Normally, you buy the type of speakers your room specifically requires.
I call classic ripoff.

I have a "Battlestar Galactica" surround sound system - a rag tag fleet of different branded speakers and woofers (four normal speakers, two woofers and two tweeters) in my room.
I mean it sounds good, I'm only using it because I have it. I wouldn't shell out those prices. Bose's markup is ridiculous, but you do get what you pay for at least.

I'm not sure about "ripoff", but Bose's sound products are designed to manipulate sound so what you're hearing sound better than what comes out of the speakers.
