(Reuters) - A U.S.-led research team may have finally located the lost city of Atlantis, the legendary metropolis believed swamped by a tsunami thousands of years ago in mud flats in southern Spain.
"This is the power of tsunamis," head researcher Richard Freund told Reuters.
"It is just so hard to understand that it can wipe out 60 miles inland, and that's pretty much what we're talking about," said Freund, a University of Hartford, Connecticut, professor who lead an international team searching for the true site of Atlantis.
To solve the age-old mystery, the team used a satellite photo of a suspected submerged city to find the site just north of Cadiz, Spain. There, buried in the vast marshlands of the Dona Ana Park, they believe that they pinpointed the ancient, multi-ringed dominion known as Atlantis.
The team of archeologists and geologists in 2009 and 2010 used a combination of deep-ground radar, digital mapping, and underwater technology to survey the site. |

Apparently Plato mentioned it.

Wasn't there someone claiming that Atlantis was under the ice caps a few years back? I remember aerial photography that indicated something large circular and either stone or metal so deep under the ice that it was for all intents and purposes impossible or at least prohibitively expensive to get to.... Was that a hoax / conspiracy?

Even if they do find a sunken city, it does not prove that it was Atlantis. Only that some settlement years ago was flooded by a tidal wave and never came back.
I personally believe that something like Atlantis once existed. I don't believe that they'll find it in a swamp of Spain.

I really thought it was common knowledge that Plato literally made Atlantis up.

Nope, not common knowledge at all. You really thought that was common knowledge?

I change 10 words in this story, it's an Onion front page exclusive about how the Japan Tsunami uncovered Atlantis.

Edgar Cayce predicted Atlantis would "rise again", along with naming Lybia and Egypt as places to watch during this time. Also noted, "Japan must go into the sea."

He also said that Russia was the light of the world, or that the world's salvation will come through Russia, something like that.
I have a book compiling all of the readings Edgar Cayce gave relating to Atlantis, it's a pretty interesting read. It's called "Edgar Cayce on Atlantis," shockingly enough.

I hope they find Atlantis. Apparently, they were way ahead of their time in terms of technology.
Strangely enough, however, I thought it would be located somewhere within the Bermuda Triangle.

Plato very likely drew on the stories of other cities that had sunk and then wrote the story of atlantis

I was half-expecting it to be found off the coast of Japan at this rate.

Well, I enjoyed the Oklahoma comment, but how does that explain that there are several underwater ruins already accounted for off the coast of Europe and the Americas (in fact, off the coast of Cuba). Just because Plato came up with Atlantis doesn't mean some form of it doesn't exist.
In short, it's always possible something like Atlantis existed. So fuck Cracked. It makes me laugh, but it's full of itself.

Atlantis itself IS bullshit. The idea of lost civilizations on the other, is a very real possibility. I'm sure that there are dozens, if not hundreds of lost cities that actually did exist at one time. I'm sure they might be using the name "Atlantis" to just generate interest.

I'll give you this one. I don't want this to turn into another Pluto argument. That was terrible.
But yeah, Atlantis was not real... Ancient civilations (I hope) were real, though. I really do wish Egyptians had mystical powers.

Of course Egyptians had mystical powers. Call it magic, call it as-yet-unexplained-technology, call it whatever you like.
Why do you think so many high powered people are into sorcery and ritual magic and all that shit? Because it works.

Cimmeria lies hidden beneath the waves, and by Crom it will rise again!
You know, Robert E. Howard basically said that he was channeling the Conan stories from Conan himself, and that they were stories of a Europe from long ago.
