Here is my review of Batman Arkham Asylum for the Xbox 360, the game is also available on Playstation 3 as well as PC.
This has to be the best Batman game ever created, and that really does not say much because most Batman games have been pretty poor. This one however gets everything about Batman and the Batman mythology right. The story works well to include various characters from Batman’s long history and they all feel like they should be there and no characters feel like they’re just thrown in. They all work to service the story.
The gameplay is also excellent. The game plays a lot like a Metroid game where you have access to almost the entire map but certain areas are blocked off until you get the necessary equipment to get through. For example there are areas that you need to plant explosive gel on in order to get into them but you don’t have the gel right away. Like say bombs or missiles in a Metroid game that let you get into doors you couldn’t get into otherwise.
The combat is also very well done and the animations are all very fluid. The combat looks like something you’d see in a movie. It never looks repetitive and it is very satisfying to take on a mob of Joker’s henchmen and watch the combat unfold in such a fluid fashion.
The stealth elements of combat are also quite satisfying. When you are picking off armed henchmen one by one and watching the others begin to freak out is really neat. Also many of the ways you can eliminate enemies are very cool. I personally like hanging on a gargoyle and hanging a henchman on it for all the other enemies to see and then watching them panic
Another thing I love is that areas that would normally be instant death traps give you a brief opportunity to escape. This really keeps the flow of the game going so you don’t always die and have to restart. Just a nice touch to keep the flow of the game moving nicely.
The Riddler also adds a lot of replay value to the game as you try to solve his various riddles and find the hidden collectibles in the game such as the Riddler trophies, and patient interview tapes scattered throughout the game. There is also a challenge mode for a little extra added replayability.
The only gameplay issue I had was the camera can sometimes get in the way and you’ll sometimes get killed by an armed enemy because you didn’t see him because of the camera.
The audio and voice work is top notch. Voice actors from the animated series like Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Arleen Sorkin all lend their voices to the game and the dialogue couldn’t be more perfect. The sound effects and ambient sounds are also top notch.
Graphics are also great and the visuals are perfect for the setting. Being able to go around Arkham Island ans experience the dark gritty nature of it is excellent. The characters all look great as well and the animations are all great.
Pros:
* Great combat system
* Voice acting is top notch
* Ability to escape what would otherwise be instant death traps
* An excellent Batman experience
Cons:
* The camera can get into the way
Overall Score: * * * * *
(All scores are out of 5 stars)

Ok so after buying this game Saturday and beating it early Monday morning, I'll add my two cents.
All the pro's I agree with however there are many more cons then you let on.
(If you want a spoiler free version or want a brief summary of this, just scroll to the bottom of the post.)
Sequence of events Spoilers:
Cons: The only Villian you ever fight in a one on one fight is Bane. For being on the damned island and everyone escaping you'd think you would have these epic boss battles all over the place. Instead I am treated to my first Boss battle against Zsas or whatever his name is. 1 batarang to the face later and the battle is over. SERIOUSLY!
Next I am encountering Bane and it gets a little more intriguing, dodging, fighting convicts, punching Bane in the face...but then we get treated to another shitty boss battle against Killer Croc...which I thought was going to be EPIC given his size. Nope, just run away from him and hit him with a batarang if he gets close then you win.
On to Harley...Beat up the bad guys she sends after you then you fight her...IN A CUT SCENE. Congrats Harley is done for. Then you get to fight Poison Ivy, ok no you don't you fight A giant flower with Poison Ivy inside it. How do you beat it? Just toss batarangs at it until it dies. Catching on? Also throughout this whoel time you have been in Nightmares with Scarecrow. However all you do is get up to a light and point it at him and he's defeated.
Now to the Joker, this has to be what they have been waiting for...the real fight is finally going to begin. Oops no it isn't he sends out a bunch of henchmen and when he turns his back you stun him punch him 3 times and repeat two more times. GAME OVER! Congrats.
With characters like Mr. Freeze, ClayFace, Riddler..etc. I thought this game would have a lot more boss battles and good boss battles. I was wrong.
In short:
The boss battles suck, ok they don't suck they are complete and utter SHIT! Also for some reason I can't find all the teeth in the Arkham Mansion. 239/240 riddles solved with no way to get all of them. Plus if you beat it you can't select to play it again on a harder difficulty without starting a whole new game, and if you plan on trying to compete in the challenges your never going to beat these peoples times.
I still like the game though, a lot.

Ah man, that is a bummer.
If I get some extra cash I may still pick it up though, if only because I absolutely adore the Riddler features (riddles and trophies). That would make it worth the money alone. Well, maybe once the price comes down on a Steam special or something anyway.
Current priority for game money is Fallout 3 though. I'm waiting for the GOTY edition to be released and specialed on Steam.

Yeah granted the bosses are meh, but for sheer ambiance and feeling like you are actually the Batman, this game delivers in spades. The game itself is very simplistic when you get down to it, and tbh there are very few times you are going to lose a fight, but absolutely none of this takes away from the game.
All in all, this game is worth the admission fee and then some, If they follow this model for future releases, I will be a happy guy. I really only have two major gripes and I think they are somewhat trivial/ 1) Smarter AI on the enemies, with bigger variety of enemy types. 2) I didn't like how if you found the Riddler's map in each area, the hidden items are essentially an X marks the spot on the map. Make the riddles hard and don't give us a in game cheat sheet....that's what the internet is for.
This is a game that delivers in almost every aspect, and I at least for the first time wished they would translate a video game into a graphic novel. Do yourself a favor Rent it or flatout buy it either way it won't disappoint you.

The game has a 92/100 critic rating on MetaCritic, and 8.3/10 user rating there.
If the game is really as bad as Douche says it, these scores say a lot about critics and the typical video game player. But also, notice the user score is lower than critic score.

I never meant to say or come across as the game being BAD. I was just a little put off by the shitty boss battles. I still couldn't put the game down when I got it and I'm still playing it. Hard is definitely a challenge, if your spotted you are essentially dead and there are no more signals shown that an enemy is attacking, it really shows if you are good by having to watch your surroundings for counter attempts and where everyone is.
Plus enemies take off a lot more. On Normal and Easy if your in a group of guys you are essentially just going to beat the shit out of them. In hard they literally surround you and just start pummeling you. Like I said if they would have had the epic boss battles I thought they were going to have this game would have been damn ear perfect.

... Very much so.
The 'Villain Trailers' had everyone under the impression that you would fight all the villains, but no (Though let's be real--A Scarecrow/Batman one-on-one fight [With none of his' Fear Gas'] would be a severe mismatch). I had heard the Joker 'battle' was a big disappointment before I even beat the game, so I wasn't too disappointed when I beat the game (The ending more or less ties up the story, and leaves room for a sequel [Which the Devs have hinted at]).
I also got all the Riddles, and it can be argued that what happens when you do is a disappointment as well, but it was still funny...

I just picked this game up for PC, and I am pretty impressed. Agreed that the boss battles are anticlimactic, but the opening scene forward immerses you in the world. I also like that there is dialog and little things to entertain you during the sequences when you are essentially just backtracking. My main gripe is that at least on the PC version, there are so many buttons doing different things, it's easy to stumble around and hit the wrong keys in quick thinking scenarios. Technically speaking I was impressed with the graphics, quick load times and (SPOILER) how the environment would quickly shift or completely change when you are gassed by Scarecrow. It's definitely worth the money on PC, as I paid like 40 bucks for it.

I saw the game played by a friend of mine, he was at Poison Ivy, and I couldn't help but laugh at her orgasmic screams. Also that Joker battle looked pretty dumb...why bulk him out?

Batman: Arkham Asylum 75 Percent Off on GFW Live
If there's one advantage services like Steam, Impulse, and Direct2Drive have always had over Games on Demand for Windows, it's that they all frequently offer deep discounts on their downloadable PC games. Microsoft's a little closer to narrowing that gap, however, as the publisher just announced a series of weekend sales on their Games for Windows Live store.
Starting tomorrow, February 26, you can download the PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum from the Games for Windows client for just $12.49 -- a discount of 75 percent off the regular price. It's scheduled to return to $49.99 at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 1.
They're promising similar deals every weekend throughout the month of March, so we'll keep you posted as each bargain is announced over the coming weeks. |

Mark Hamill to Retire Joker Role After Arkham Asylum 2
Mark Hamill, known as both Luke Skywalker and one of the most revered voices of the Joker, says he'll be hanging up his acid-squirting flower after completing Batman: Arkham Asylum 2. In an IGN interview, the veteran actor says he was reluctant to return to the role for the original Arkham, and even more so for its sequel. "This will be my last, there's no question about that," he said. "But it's the last hurrah."
Hamill says his original reluctance was due to feeling he had "left the role on a high note" after the cartoon series. "But they said, 'We got Paul Dini,' who was my favorite ever Joker writer, 'and Kevin Conroy,' who I love. This was a real reunion and a very pleasant experience. So of course I relented, but I had no idea it would have the impact it did." He says he was similarly hesitant to sign on for a second game, feeling they couldn't top the original. He changed his mind when Rocksteady told him what they had in mind for the character in the sequel. "But I'm sworn to secrecy!" he claims.
The finality of the statement has led to speculation that Joker will die in this sequel, which is supported by what we've seen. The teaser trailer showed a sickly Joker, giving a hacking cough between his cackles. We'll have to see how Rocksteady intends to make this his final joke. |

Because the game designer wanted to give it gritty and dirty style. One thing i disliked about the game. It doesn't represent Batman the way i like it.

Yeah, I really hated that Poison Ivy fight. It could've been so much better. I honestly haven't heard a lot about the sequel...has there been a list of who's going to be in it?

Well, shitty boss battles is a big gripe, at least for me. If I'm playing a fucking Batman game, it's because I want to have epic fucking showdowns with kickass supervillains from his rogue's gallery. Instead, you get fucking Mario 64 boss battles. Three hits, and the boss is done. It's fucking retarded.
