Speaking at a talk during the Game Developer Conference today, designer Yu Suzuki said that he thinks Sega is going to let him make Shenmue III. The audience broke into shouts and applause, and then Suzuki abruptly changed topics.

Yu Suzuki should just keep taunting fans with fake Shenmue III trailers and then finally release "Ryo Hazuki's Hibachi Chef Challenge" or "Ryo Hazuki Works the Docks" which would be an extended version of the forklift minigame where you can gamble and pick up hookers while avoiding skeezy pimps and STD's.
It's not happening. I had my hopes up for quite some time. In between Yu's winks and nods in press conferences, lame fan speculation, and outright fake articles, I've played other games, better games. Better action, better stories, much better voice acting, and they're all better than Shenmue. Every time I play the game, it gets older and more ridiculous. Some things still hold up. The atmosphere is great, and the fighting (when you actually get to god-damned fight) is cool and fun, but I just can't work up any more enthusiasm for another "Woo, Suzuki-san says he might get to talk to someone in the company who might be convinced to maybe release a two-part comic that tells us what happened. That means Shenmue 3 is in development!"
Then they're stuck. If they try to innovate and play catch-up by dropping the stupid QTEs and job minigames, then the fans will bitch that "It doesn't have the same spirit."
While if they try to keep it the same, it'll suck. Really, I just think it was the cliffhanger of Shenmue 2, considering it went from believable to nutshit in ten seconds, people would kill for an installment that will just answer the collective "What the hell?" everyone muttered at the end of that game.
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

^ Kinda like Daikatana, eh? That game was doomed just from all the hype that preceded it. Romero couldn't have won no matter what he eventually came out with.

The entire game is just this boring guy walking around talking to equally boring people. You have to take care of things like finding a place to live and getting a job, and at the end of the game you don't really accomplish anything worthwhile.

I love it because when it came out I was living in Japan, and instead of going outside I could just plug in my Dreamcast and explore the streets from the comfort of my room.

Are Japanese people really as batshit insane as they seem from the vantage point of the internet?
I'm specifically referencing the YATTA craze, of course.

After working all day to support myself, I really don't see the appeal in coming home to unwind, and having to get a job to support myself in a video game.

But that game was just a bad game. Even if Shenmue 3 was a good game, it'd be kind of doomed. There's not much of a market for a game with awful acting (as in so bad it's bad), constant QTE's, and walking around asking if the locals know somebody named Ming, who will lead you to Zhang, who will lead you to Deng, who will tell you how to get into the old lady's house to obtain the woman's old mirror.

Daikatana wasn't that bad a game, if it had come out when it was actually supposed to, it might have been considered awesome. Deus Ex and Half Life destroyed it completely, but just the sheer amount of hype and expectations were impossible to live up to.

True. I have to assume that Suzuki would at least try to update the mechanics, though.

If there is a third game, it needs way more action in it. I don't know how the second one was because I didn't own an Xbox but the first game had like 5 fights in it.
Shake it, Quake it, Space Kaboom.

If you can look past a frustrating buddy system, completely useless weapons, boring enemies, a terrible story, wretched voice-acting, and other messes, I'd consider it bad.
Also, I talk shit about Shenmue 3, but I'd buy it on day one if it was released.
