Most of us remember those recent years when Electronic Arts was at the top. By the middle of the last decade, the house of Fifa and Need For Speed was virtually printing money thanks to its established IP simultaneous with a cry from gamers lamenting what they saw as low-quality output.
Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco, the company's current CEO John Riccitiello admitted that the strategy of relying on the same franchises played its part in knocking EA down a few pegs.
| Quote: |
| "If you go back seven years, we were the leader. And we dropped the ball. Our IP deteriorated, our costs went up, and we didn’t really have an answer for the rise of digital... Need For Speed ended up flat on its back. That annual sequel thing got to us. That was a very tough business run. We just didn’t have the portfolio." |
At the same conference, Riccitiello stated that he believes the Dead Space franchise will come into its own commercially when the company releases Dead Space 3. |

Maybe they'll look at old IPs and make a new Road Rash.

Yea, despite my general disdain for EA, I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed the first Dead Space and the second one is even better.

Um... isn't Dead Space already a commercial and critical hit? Don't people already love it? Besides Game #3 generally is generally where a franchise starts to wear on people.
Sonic 3 was OMG THE LAST GOOD SONIC GAME.
Mortal Kombat 3 was the most anticipated entry in the MK series, and the second worst fighting game in the series. Only Armageddon was worse.
No one likes Soul Calibur 3. Hell, people barely even remember it.
Street Fighter 3 was great, but Capcom was apparently completely disinterested in it.
Metal Slug 3 was the last truly great Metal Slug.
Resident Evil 3 (along with Code Veronica) damaged the RE series so badly that it almost died.
Guitar Hero III turned Guitar Hero into not just a household name, but househould product. The GH games that followed were overmarketed and filled with poor attempts to appeal to every demographic at once killed the franchise.
Exceptions to the rule:
Guilty Gear XX (in all its incarnations) is the only of the three Guilty Gear games that people play.
Mario hasn't missed a beat in his console adventures since Super Mario 3.
Tekken 3 marked the true beginning of Tekken as worthwhile fighting games.
And anyway, Dead Space 3? Meh. Dead Space 5, now THAT'S gonna be the game to watch.

You forget Zelda 3, Castlevania 3, and Metroid 3on your exceptions list.
But toss Megaman 3 and Megaman X3 onto your proof of concept.

This is kind of old news. A few years ago, Ricciotello took over the company and completely turned it around from the slave-driving sequelmachine it once was. They're now at the point where even John Carmack (The cranky old man of the games industry) even praises them about their EA Partners program, which offers unique publishing projects to both large and small developers. Over the past few years, they've published some of my favorite current-gen games including:
Brutal Legend, Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Mass Effect (1 and 2), Dragon Age, Deathspank, Rock Band, and a few others, with games like the new Alice game, Rage, Bulletstorm, Valve's retail releases, and that Suda51/Shinji Mikami game all coming down the pipe.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

EA needs to do a remake of NHL94 with the same viewing angle, just better graphics and make online play available. If they simply updated the top down view game that used to be console hockey, I would love that shit.

How was Code Veronica that bad? That game was Capcom's redemption after 3.

I don't really get people's disdain for EA. They've published a ton of great games over the last decade that I'd be hard pressed to say were "lacking in quality." Sure, like any big publishing corporation there's a few duds that were released, but really, I don't get the hate.
And yeah, those comments about Dead Space are a bit strange. I also thought both games have been critical and commercial successes so what does he mean by "come into its own commercially". Maybe it's just his strange and roundabout way of announcing Dead Space 3?

I liked Resident Evil 3. Nothing makes you work harder than some facially-disfigured freak chasing you down the whole game.

I thought Gun Survivor and the Online Outbreak games damaged the series more then 3 or Code Veronica...
EA used to have a solid track record, but now it's trying to compete with another big bad company to reclaim it's gold. They killed MoH by making it a CoD type game, they took Dante's Inferno and made it God of Inferno and Burnout has burnt out.
They need to either renovate the classics, make a modern version of Desert Strike, Wing Commander and Polterguy, or at least release them on the PSN or XBLA or start making games that are revolutionary, make a new game or concept.
At least they have some sport games still...

Look at Call of Duty 3. The single player was all right but the multiplayer aspect was garbage. The stuff after this game was pretty good though.

And yes, EA is essentially the american Koei

I can see where a person could try to define a pattern, but in this case I disagree.
Fallout
Elder Scrolls
Zelda
Metroid
GTA
Call of Duty
Final Fantasy
Madden
SmackDown vs. Raw
Castlevania
Mario Kart
All of them had strong showings after their 3rd release.
Also, I hate horror games, but weren't Resident Evil 4 and 5 highly acclaimed?

Visceral Games (which started as some random EA developer), only originally made licensed games (with Return of the King and The Godfather being the standouts), with Dead Space being their first original IP. Well-designed survival horror games are a rarity, and Dead Space seems to be the #1 contender in the genre after RE5 got decent reviews, but it played like crap and turned some people off, Silent Hill is too involved with fan-service and bland design to be the cult hero anymore (Though I still consider SH2 to be the best in the genre). Amnesia: The Dark Descent was a new IP (and a better game for that matter), but while it has critical success, it's not a mega-seller like Dead Space.
When you consider these factors, and that Dead Space is a 3-year-old franchise with just two installments (main installments anyway), then it is impressive how it's come into its own.
