I'm just now starting to play this game (Chapter 7). Normally, I'm so opposed to the horror genre that I purposely stray away from horror movies or games. But I thought "What the hell? Might as well get over it."
Bad idea. I'm starting to have nightmares about this shit, and I flinch at small noises. Please tell me I'm not the only one who did this. I'm determined to see it all the way through now that I've started, so stopping isn't an option at this point...
I just want to know I'm not a total loser for reacting so strongly to this.

i had a similar reaction when i first played Silent Hill 2. but then i manned up and stopped being a wuss.
and when i was a wee lad, i would reset my NES when it went from day to night while playing Friday the 13th.

Yeah, Dead Space can be pretty creepy at times. Especially when that crazy regenerating monster is stalking you, every noise is your approaching death!

Don't remind me. Now I want to kill my dogs so they don't make that fucking noise.

Or when you're running from something and you come around a corner into a cheery swarm of those little exploding fuckers. Or Dividers, have you run into them yet? They're AWESOME.

Dividers. Let me guess, they turn into two? Or chop you in half. Or something else equally gross.

dead space is alright, yet i think it is overrated.
the only oustanding and new about it are the neat graphics, everything else is ripped of from resident evil, the force unleashed etc. But it was fun to play it, without a doubt.
also, i don't think it was too creepy, it was more exciting-creepy to me.

You may have run into parts of Dividers already, I forget when they start showing up as chunks but the whole ones don't show up til later in the game. They're big tall motherfuckers who split into two or three crawling "hand" pieces and a "head" piece when you do enough damage to the combined form. The pieces climb walls and ceilings and are generally an annoyance to kill. Though let one of the head ones kill you if you see it, they have the best death sequence of any enemy.

I avoid horror games like the plague as well, for exactly the same reason--I'm super susceptible to the atmosphere. Doom 3 had be curled up in a fetal position under my gaming desk for ages after trying to play it.
Here's what I found helps, though: find an LP or play through, and watch someone else play it while commenting. Takes a lot of the sting out of the scary parts, and helps you build other memories (of the commentary rather than the scary stuff) around the game. That cured me of Doom 3, anyway.

the dividers are easy. shot them with the cutter or something (aim at head, arms, or legs to finish them of quickly) till the split and then change over to the force gun to finish off all those tiny fuckers with one or two blows (depending on how many upgrades you used on it).
you don't even need to aim precisely. The force gun works wonders on tiny swarming enemys, against anything else it blows.
Every enemy in the game has it's very own weakpoints.
Find them and most enemy's won't give you any trouble.
That simply means shooting at special body-parts or using a specific weapon on them. It's not that hard.

See, I never found DS1 or 2 that scary. I did jump a few times, but the only time I felt really scared was when I was being swarmed. Both are excellent games though.

I get like that. Condemned had me turning on lights wherever I went, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent gave me some fucked up nightmares.

Well that's just common sense, not paranoia or anything. There could be broken glass to avoid stepping on, or a serial rapist clown in there. Safety first!

God, thank you so much for that advice. I'm just watching a walk through now... And the commentary is funny.

It wouldn't be this one, would it: http://lparchive.org/Dead-Space/
That one's particularly good, as he has posts where he clears up plot points, or compares plot holes between the movies, books, and game.
