This is decent, but I actually really liked his Top 10 movies that he hates that everyone else loves. I could not agree more about District 9.

Do you have a link to that one Dodds? I'd like to see that.

I disagree with his points on spider-man. Any oddness never stood out and a comicbook movie goes hand and hand with willing suspension of disbelief. You could man a similiar list of batman if you so chose.

Could someone list them or is watching the video mandatory?

I love District 9. In fact, I did an entire blog post about why I love it so much: http://soldierhawk.wordpress.com/2010/01/18/why-i-love-district-9/

I think the NC was a little harsh on the other Spider-Mans. I ADORED Willem Dafoe as Goblin (although in fairness, I adore Willem Dafoe in anything) and Alfred Molina as Doc Ok was frigging EPIC. It was NOT stupid that his tentacles talked to him; I thought it was a great way of showing both how they were controlling him, and how his subconscious snapped after his wife's death. It makes his own death scene and sacrifice genuinely affecting. At least I thought so.

I enjoyed your analysis, very well written and pretty spot-on from my eyes. However, I feel that you left out the over-theme that was glaringly obvious based upon comments from the writer/director and the film itself. I covered this in the District 9 thread:

Glad to see I'm not the only person to think that movie kicked total ass, though.

I think it needs to be noted that I don't think the NC was looking at the movies as a comic book fan, but a movie fan. Things that a fan of the Spidey comics might mark out over would not be received so well by someone who just wants to see a movie.

I wan't to point out the fact that the reason the tentacles have AI is because he's got to effectively manipulate four surgically precise and extremely mobile arms in addition to the ones he has now.

I don't know why the arms are evil though(maybe his own subconscious, as the arms work without any personal imput and may operate on what he desires to do, making some kind of ID feedback loop?) . Its a comic book movie in the classic style, the same reason he was making tiny suns inside New York city limits.

Yeah, I don't see an advantage of having tentacle AI, unless you're just a lazy fuck. Maybe they should've played up that theme. Octavious is a lazy motherfucker who doesn't want to chew his food or blink his eyes, so he starts work on a way to live easier, but the experiment goes horribly wrong.

And being a fan of the comics and the animated series, I HATED these movies. Yeah, I know...suspension of disbelief...blah blah...yeah...too many instances to suspend in my mind. That's why the news of the reboot doesn't bother me too much.

Creating tentacles with AI is a terrible idea especially with their tendancy to rape.

Yeah, and I really didn't need to see amnesia in a fucking Spiderman movie, I don't give a shit if it was one of the many shitty storylines in the comics.

There seems to be no way to please you with spider-man in film and I promise you there will be suspension of disbelief in the reboot.

Oh there is, as silly as the 90's cartoon was, I actually thought it was more realistic than the movies. I think there are plenty of ways to make a good Spiderman movie rather than the repeated absurdity that plagued those three movies. I think those movies were to appeal to small kids first and foremost.

It wasn't very realistic...but it was when compared to the movies...at least for me. Even the dialogue seemed more mature.

It's a movie about a comic book superhero, why shouldn't it?

OK I've turned the corner on this guy. A few years ago I wrote him off as a Nerd wannabe who brought nothing to the table, but after seeing the two videos linked here, I'm a fan now.

The Spider-man video was wildly entertaining to me and I agreed with just about everything he said in the Top 10 Movies He Hates But Everyones Else Loves video, especially when it came to Gladiator, Avatar, American Pie, and District 9. I particularly agreed with every single one of his arguements against District 9, especially about the heavy handeded obvious "message", the fact that it should have been a short film, and that I was left baffled by the end as to why everyone was saying what a great movie it was.

I can't wait to see what he comes up with next week with his "10 Movies I Love That Everyone Else Hates" list as I have a lot of those kinds of movies too including 13th Warrior, Man in the Iron Mask, and Cloverfield.

Thank you so much for these links guys and opening my eyes to the Nostalgia Critic.

Because you don't have the simplify everything just so little kids get it. You can make movies that appeal to a broad audience. Small kids don't give a shit about the story or even the dialogue, all they want to see is a guy in a suit doing some cool moves while fighting another guy in a suit. These movies just had too much screwball nonsense for me to even care.

What's funny is that I went into Cloverfield with a few low opinion on what I was about to watch, and came out more impressed than I thought I would. I wouldn't call it one of my favorite movies or anything, but it served it's purpose without hammering some obvious message or trying to make me feel for a character that I don't really care for. It did exactly what a movie should do, introduce the characters, create a rift between them, have something tragic happen, etc etc. All District 9 had was a bunch of over the top gory action, ridiculous plotholes and a main character I hated throughout the entire movie. If you want to watch a good movie about persecution in South Africa, watch Cry Freedom.

I can't say I agree with Doug about Willem Dafoe. I really enjoyed the fact that he was so goofy. I mean, much like DC's Joker, Green Goblin has had his different faces as well.

People hate The 13th Warrior?!

I mean, yeah its a blatant Beowulf ripoff, but the movie just kicks ass.
