I suck at these games, but I'd like to get into em a bit. Is there shmups that are a bit more starter-friendly than R-Type or Gradius -games on the SNes for example? I unfortunately don't have the time to memorize everything from level 1.
It'd be great if the games were on any ps-console, pc, or older well-emulated system.

Super Aleste on the Snes is pretty easy, but very fun

Depends on what you mean by starter-friendly. Pretty much any modern console shmup (most of which are bullet hell) will give you infinite continues (because they're direct arcade ports, as opposed to SNES and NES era ones which were redesigned for console sensibilities) and respawn you where you died instead of at some sort of checkpoint. The reason for this is because most shmup players don't consider the game truly beaten until you clear it on a single credit.
Axelay for SNES is the easiest shmup if played so far, although the common opinion is that it is no easy shump.
It also doesn't matter, it makes no sense starting with an easy shmup.
Just get one and be hardcore. Thats how you play them.
it was the best of times
it was the blurst of times

If you can afford it, the novice modes of Mushihime-sama Futari are actually very suitable for beginners. It's probably the only bullet hell shmup to understand the concept of "easy".
I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

If you hate memorizing everything, play bullet hells, there's no need to really memorize anything until you hit the higher difficulties. Well, except for Ikaruga.

Lavalarva is correct. The game he's talking about is a region free Japanese shmup for the 360.
DeathSmiles for the 360 is also a good one. Each level can be played on one of three difficulties, 1-3. The boss patterns on the easiest difficulty are easy to learn, and the bosses retain those patterns on the higher difficulties. The catch is that on higher difficulties, additional patterns are thrown in once they take more damage.
there's a difference between normal shmups and bullet hell games, right? cause I don't remember Super R-Type or 1942 filling the screen with bullets when I was a kid.
Why anyone would play Super R-Type when R-Type 1, 2, 3, Delta and Final exist is fking beyond me.

Because it was an early SNES game that came out around the time that we were all young kids first really sinking our teeth into games, and therefore it holds a nostalgic place in our hearts. This is especially true for the lot of us that simply enjoy playing games, and not holding our noses up at those who may not have the same expertise that others do.

My point was that they all do what it does, only much better. You'll get no snobbery from me.

I know what your point was, and my point was that there are people out there who don't know that the other R-Type games are better. I certainly didn't.

MUSHA's a great game, there's a sequel for Sega CD called Robo Aleste that's also great and even harder.

Yeah, what this fine gentleman said. Super R-Type holds a special place in my heart.
Besides, by the time those others came out, I was getting vagina and becoming an adult.
