I’m a huge fan of Morrowind and Oblivion. I’ve played both games on the Xbox and Xbox 360, and thoroughly enjoy them. However, I’m looking for a similar game on the PC (besides other Elder Scrolls games), but have had no such luck. The closest thing I’ve found is Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Any suggestions on similarly open-ended, fantasy style games?
PS: Games that are either freeware or just old are preferable, mostly because my computer sucks.

Baldur's Gate. Play it right now. I'm serious. Not the console sequels, but the original PC game. Why aren't you playing it yet?

Sit down and beat all the King's Quest games. Yes even the 3D one.

The Gothic series will suit you just fine. I recommend them.

I've heard many good things about Baldur's Gate, and will certainly give it a try. However, I'm still looking for a first-person deal. Any suggestions? Preferably ones that are either free or available on Steam.

I already told you, the Gothic series, Gothic 2 and Gothic 3 are what come to mind. IIRC you can play them first person if you want.

Arx Fatalis - Excellent game, and I recall it's available on Steam.
Edit: 1st person rpgs were huge back in the day. If you can get over the dated nature of these games, I'd highly recommend Ultima Underworld, Wizardry -series, Might & Magic -series (not the "Heroes of..."), and even AD&D -pc games.

This. Gothic is super fun and was one of the first games that allowed you to do whatever you wanted any time you wanted. Need a place to sleep? Just go into someone's house and get in their bed. If they come home and kick up a fuss, you can kill 'em and go back to sleep. Just make sure they aren't a shopkeeper or something because once you kill them, they're dead forever.

I 2nd Arx Fatalis.
Also, Two Worlds 2 is highly recommended. They fixed the buggy issues of the 1st one, and it is far better game. Though, with all the patches, Two Worlds 1 is quite playable as well.
3rd Person RPGs:
Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2
The Witcher

Two Worlds 1 and NWN are excellent as well. The Witcher I couldn't get into, and I haven't yet played TW2.

I almost did, but he mentioned he wanted older titles because he computer isn't the best. DA:O is a resource hog. Amazing if you can play it though.
I second Baulder's Gate and King's Quest. Quest for Glory is my favorite of the old Sierra series'.

Actually, I have an Xbox 360. Does Dragon Age lose anything in the translation (control- or graphics-wise)?

I'd say no. I've tried the 360-version, and unexpectedly the battle was even more fun with a controller. You'll love it.

Dragon Age is good, and the visuals are basic, so there's very little lost in conversion. Another game where i just got exasperated, set it to easy, and had fun exploring the world and talking.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

Update: I've played the demo for Arx Fatalis. While it is indeed cool, and probably has a lot of freedom for the player, the controls were a bit too confusing for my taste. Haven't played the Gothic demo, but plan to.

If you are running XP and want to play Baulders Gate you may have some problems. Just a heads up.
