http://io9.com/5741015/the-year-2011-according-to-thomas-edison-in-1911
From a British newspaper article a century ago.
* Steam engine relegated to a quaint antiquity.
* All machines will be powered by electricity, with trains using hydraulic wheels to generate theirs.
* Colossal machines will allow man to fly at 200 mph.
* The house of 2011 will be enitrely furnished with and constructed of steel "so light that it will be as easy to move a sideboard as it is today to lift a drawing room chair."
* Books will be printed on leaves of nickel, with a two inch book able to house 40,000 pages. Each volume of Encyclopedia Britannica will weigh 1 pound.
* Gold will be devalued to the same worth as steel and iron., due to the impending creation of metal transmutation (and without a circle at that!). "In the magical days to come there is no reason why our great liners should not be of solid gold from stem to stern; why we should not ride in golden taxicabs, or substituted gold for steel in our drawing room suites. Only steel will be the more durable, and thus the cheaper in the long run."

What an idiot. I vote we posthumously change his name to Thomas Retardison.

Whatever. You know what year Robocop was supposed to take place in? 1997.
It's over a decade later. Where THE FUCK are my ED-209s?

Didn't Edison realize that building ships and cars out of solid gold instead of steel would probably be a very bad idea?

I'm willing to give some creative license on the book remark, given the presence of things like the Kindle and the Nook. The alchemy thing is still a bit of a head scratcher.

Fun read. It is a shame he isn't around to see how things did turn out.

You forgot Edison's most important prediction of 2011: "My archenemy Tesla will be dead dead dead! Mwa ha ha!"

Yeah. Forget Edison. He was just better at self promotion than Telsa, and hence, is the one in the history books.
While Edison spent most of his time patting himself on the back, Telsa was actually working and building shit people still don't understand.
I mean we are just now starting to use wireless energy. Telsa had that working a CENTURY ago.

That gold and gem-encrusted Monopoly set comes to mind.

Yeah since we're apparently making gold left and right here in 2011...

We use to take Field Trips to the Edison Home in Ft. Myers, FL all the time. It was kinda cool the first time, then it was just really boring.
All the gigantic trees were sweet to check out though.

I don't really remember I was in Middle School when we did all of this, I just remember seeing the music players, light bulbs, and a ton of really old looking/smelling shit.
Yes, it has it's own "this stuff is super old" smell to it.

What about his six-legged chair that won't tip over no matter how far back you lean?

Well, his fabled Tesla Coils fried many an allied soldier, it's powers doubled when super-charged by a Tesla Trooper...

Yeah, imagine getting into an accident with another solid gold car; you'd moosh together like two sticks of butter, no survivors.
