There is a set of spikes in Mega Man 3 that I hit like every time on Sparkman's stage at the floating platforms part. Luckily there is a bolt enemy right beneath them and so I always hit him first and have momentary invincibility. I guess that saying about them always killing you isn't true.

I used to just let that fly. Now whenever I jump on that platform, I jump back to the ledge I came from and take out the bolt enemy, thus saving myself damage and bullshit.
