That's some wishful thinking right there, for 2 little reasons:
A- When have sequels ever made up for the original being sucky? I'm sure it's already happened in the history of ever, but I doubt it's that common (Ok, Street fighter, sure, but that's the only one that comes to mind)
B- Remember the last FF sequel? And the one before that? They don't have a good track record when it comes to keeping a story going past one game :/

I liked X-2. I mean, I really liked it. I'm on board with this one.

Given that I loathe XIII, I'm suprised that I'm actually waiting for this one. Maybe they'll even give us an rpg where you can explore places!
X-2 was ok, but XII: Revenant Wings near excellent - liked it better than the original.

Sequels would be X-2 and FF XII: Revenant Wings.
And this IS happening. Lightning appears to be the uncontested main character of this game, which will be appearing on the PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year. The developers stated that this sequel is coming out due to requests from fans and staff, but also acknowledged that valid criticisms were levelled against XIII. They hope to address those criticisms in the sequel. (skip to the :33 mark if you don't want to be spoiled on the ending to XIII):

I rented FF XIII for a couple of days and liked to play it. it is somehow a pretty lame game because it is strangely unbalanced. The Graphics are extremely good wich to me is a reason to like a game. But besides that the game offers nothing new or original so most people didn't like it.
i was just happy to play the next FF game.
I have no idea in wich direction square-enix takes FF XIII-2 so i can't tell if i will ever play it, though the trailer looks rad.

I still haven't beat XIII. I'm at the end, but I don't really care.

I get that feeling with every FF game. I don't have the stamina to finish one. 4 months later when I do feel like playing it again, I have no idea what is going on and have to start over. Repeat ad naseum

I personally really enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII, it was one of the First RPG's in a long time that I actually got a game over in. Even when you are completely maxed out you can still die in seconds which keeps the challenge in the later portions of the epilogue. You couldn't just pull out your best spell and destory everything you actually had to use strategy and the shifts. If you don't like it because the main story is linear fine, but if that's not it then give a reason. Final Fantasy 4 is linear but you never hear anyone bash that. What's an example of a non linear RPG where you don't have to do tasks to move the plot in a specific order.

I like linear RPG's. Lufia 2 is still my favorite RPG of all time, so i could go pretty well with FF XIII.

It's a good sign for me that most people here seem to dislike XIII as that means I'll love it. I also love linear games (I hate games that are so open you have no idea where to go next and have to choose between 10 different paths).
I often end up like Dr. Strangelove's post as well where I usually burn out on the game before I can complete it and by the time I go back to it, have to start over. The only FFs that have held my attention long enough for me to complete them (and thus I love them) are IX and X-2 which so happen to both be the "black sheep" of the franchise. I still haven't been able to play more than a few hours of VI, got about halfway through IV, didn't care for VII and never completed X which are the most popular FFs.
So I guess what I'm saying is: keep bashing XIII because that makes me even more excited to play it.
