Is this seriously news worthy? Am I being Bias because I'm Navy? I really want to know if anyone would actually be offended by this, and why the hell CNN is blowing this issue up so much.
EDIT: Did a little mistyping, above, I really need to replace the word offended with suprised. There are Homosexual Slurs used, and yes, that could be taken wrongly by the homosexual community.

Atma, you're a US citizen (or at least I presume, I know non-citizens can serve, but that's an aside). How on Earth could it be surprising that someone, most likely not at all involved in anything military, is going to take umbrage at something like that? We're a nation that simultaneously demonizes and glorifies anything illicit, profane or even just distasteful.

Born and Raised in FL, so yes on the US Citizen part.
I'm just assuming its a slow day in the offices of CNN.
But, I agree that the Gay Slurs are in poor taste from a high ranking officer, but still, nothing is higher than PG-13, and a "hey you need to clean your act up" from the next up should be all that happens.
Some people on the CNN forums are screaming he needs to have his command taken from him like he smashed his ship into a reef.

That is the Media for you. Anything they can do to up their ratings they will try. They spent like 4 months demonizing Tiger Woods when there was bigger news going on. Who really gives a damn about this or what some jackass celeb is doing? I'd rather know if N. Korea has nuked S. Korea yet or not because that might actually affect me. This is why if I want to know what is going on in the world I don't turn on CNN or Fox. I can actually get more important news from the Daily Show most of the time and that is sad.

I love the Daily Show too, I just find it sad that 24 hour news shows are less reliable than a 30 minute comedy news show.

It's sad because it's almost like getting your vital news from the Onion. That said, the idea of journalism as it was thirty or fourty years ago, that's gone, and it's not coming back. The media's been co-opted (moreso than ever) along partisan lines. It's a feed straight from one side or the other trying to make you believe their spin. I just don't pay attention to anything coming from a newssource like MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, Yahoo, etc because none of it is really real.

Ehhh.... I can kinda see why people might be upset, because this doesn't really reflect nicely on the Navy in general. Inappropriate, unprofessional, and so on. If you were trying to get a job and your future employer found this video of you throwing around homophobic slurs and acting pretty immature, do you think you'd get your job? Depends on the employer I suppose. 8D
That said, I also don't think this should really be front page news. At the end of the day it isn't really that big of a deal, is it? No one died, no one was assaulted. At most, the dude just made himself look like a moron. Big deal, people do stupid things all the time.

Surely the Navy--and all the services--expect better of their commanding officers than this crap--that's the real issue I see. Not that it was sooooo terribly offensive (although in fairness, that video is an edited version--take that for what its worth; I haven't seen the full thing), but the fact that a frigging full bird would be assinine enough, and STUPID enough, to do something like that. This kind of behavior wouldn't even fly with the lowest of officers, let alone a Naval captain. It's the kind of thing I'd expect from an 18 year old private. The dude's an idiot, and deserves what he gets imho.
I mean if you're going to be vulgar and stupid whatever, but for god's sake don't do it if you're an 0-6, and REALLY don't do it *in front of a fucking camera, multiple times!* Good grief!

^ Agreed. I'm not offended by the content, but with all the sexual harrasment training and EO crap the military makes you go through, he needs to reprimanded for being stupid. Hawk is right. He is supposed to be setting an example, and he's not some 18 year old private/airman/seaman.
I got bitched at for taking pictures of my squad playing tightrope on a galvanized pipe that was laid across a shallow pit. If you're going to be stupid and you stand to lose something other than dignity, don't record it.

Maybe its a Ship thing then Hawk, because I totally Disagree. I see at as a CO who is down to Earth, trying to raise his Crew's Morale, and isn't a PC Toolbag.
Was it the Smartest thing? No. He should have known better. But I don't think he needs to be Crucified like the Media is trying to do to him.
EDIT: Also, Watch the full video, CNN's Edit makes it look a lot worse than it is.

I agree to this, ive seen way worse things from 1 star generals then this crap. This is the same stupid shit like the reflective belt rule for the air force, stuff like this is slowly killing the military

But he damn well should have been smart enough to know how that LOOKS, and that if even one person gets offended--or even doesn't like him--and got ahold of those videos, that the PC obsessed public would be calling for his command, ad possibly his career, before he knew what was happening. His crime is one of being an idiot and having absolutely wretched judgment more than anything else.
Now, speaking as a future officer myself, I can tell you that I personally find his antics offensive in their juvenile nature, and think that he should be setting a far, far better example than what is shown in that video. Not that officers are untouchable, high and mighty, or anything of the sort...but their job--their JOB--is to be in command, and maintain authority. Something like this completely and utterly undermines that, or at least it seems to to me. I don't know the Navy, and I especially don't know that ship and her crew so I won't actually pass judgment here, but I can tell you it goes against every bit of what I've spent four years learning about being an officer. I find it offensive on that level more than any other.
(And, to be fair, there have been plenty of junior officers who get themselves in hot water because they work harder at being "one of the guys" than they do at *doing their damn job.* What makes this unusual is the guy's rank...you'd think after so many years, he'd know better.)

Check out the uncut vids when you get a moment Hawk, a lot of the stuff they show has Context edited out, and a lot of the Cursing came from Bloopers, not the actual video.
Back on your last post, yes, in a picture perfect robot world. Officers live and breath regulations and whatever.
These were videos the XO made to bring up morale, and they weren't Mandatory to watch.
I know a few people on board the Enterprise and everyone they work with thought they were Hilarious, Loved them, and couldn't wait until the next weeks one. Something to look forward to on a shitty deployment.
Again, you're correct in the fact that he should have known better, and that it could look bad. He was surely stepping in some Grey area if not crossed the line as a XO. But, with that being said, it's no where bad enough IMO to have his Command Stripped from him.
What about the CO over him who allowed the Video's to be shown on the ship? Wouldn't that have to be his Final Call?

Offended? A little. Surprised? Not at all.
I guess the most I can say is Hawk's got it down pat.
They need to exhibit better behavior if they want respect, but I'm not sure I can expect it, simply because it boils down to the nature of man to be vulgar. But you'd think he'd have the sense not to do it in front of a camera.
