So I'm a huge fan of Valve--Half Life, Portal, etc etc etc. I adore their writing, love their scripts, love their gameplay. The only games by them (other than things like TF, since I'm not a big multiplayer fan) is the L4D series. I'm not terribly into zombies--although I love Zombieland, Walking Dead and 28 Days later. So with that in mind, for those of you who've played the games, is it worth investing my $30 to buy the L4D 1/2 pack on Steam? I'm almost ready to get in just on the principle that I adore Valve and will willingly give them $30 just for being Valve, but I would like to know that I won't ENTIRELY loathe the games if I buy em. Thoughts?

I'm a big fan of the original Half Life as well as Half Life 2. With that said, I just could not get into either Left 4 Dead 1 or 2. It's a very boring game mechanic IMO, which consists of constantly depending on the other people in your squad for backup or constantly trying to save someone else.
Remember the part in Half Life 2 with the things that popped up out of the sand and flew at your and rushed you unless you were standing on the rocks? The whole game is pretty much like that but with zombies who never give you a break so basically you just shoot and shoot and shoot. That's about it.
They are great to look at graphically I guess but that's never a requirement for me personally and the game never really gives you the chance to enjoy it.

Since you don't really play online it's a tough choice. Storywise it's really thin, meaning the only story you get is "there are zombies, you are a survivor", plus the comic they made for The Sacrifice which gives more story then the games altogether.
There are two traits to the games that I love personally, the AI Director and the Multiplayer VS. aspect. The AI Director makes it a different game almost every time you play it, meaning there might be a tank at one point or there might be two hunters or a witch. In addition, where there might be just another pistol lying on a table, there could be an M16 there the next time you play it. L4D2 increases the AI Director with the different atmosphere, meaning there could be more fog or there could be rain.
The Multiplayer Vs. mode is my favorite part because you play as both Survivor and Zombie, and for some reason it is satisfying to just pounce a survivor and rip them to shreds... plus the amount of Rage Quits makes it phenomenal.
Overall, for $30 I say get it, even if you don't play online it could always be a different game you play, but when you do play online, there could be some of the most strategic and heart pounding moments you would ever have...

It's Half Life Mulitplayer Non Stop Zombie Swarm! If you have no online buddies (like me) be prepared for the retarded AI to run in front of you when you're shooting and complain about it, eat up all the health drops, then run in front of your stream of bullets again...

The game is BUILT around multiplayer.
If you're really into the process of building a game, it's still interesting to explore it and see what they did. That's the part that I enjoyed about it the most.

Yeah I got that feeling, too bad the AI sucks so bad because I don't have internets for my 360 and my girlfriend sucks at FPS as bad as the AI on split screen co op.

The A.I. Is fine. You're surviving a horde of mindless zombies, not fighting cunning terrorists or ruthless space aliens.

Uh no. Survivor AI is not fine. There has been many a time where I'll be hanging from a cliff or something, and they stand there and watch as I slowly die.
I do like L4D1&2. Play with actual people though. Also, Steam constantly puts the L4D1&2 bundle on sale for about $9.99, so I'd wait a little if you're unsure and get it when it's on sale.

Yeah ok. And I'm upset that there's no cover system or perks.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up! Wasn't it only around for like three months then Valve sued them or something?

Hm. Does anyone here still play L4D/L4D2? If so, that might cement my decision to buy. I'd be willing to multiplay with guys I know and trust; it's the dumbasses you get thrown in with I hate.

I still play it when my school isn't in a lag-fest due to updates...

I actually wanna play burnout revenge again! Let's get a game going sometime!
Also, left4head left something to be desired. It didn't help satiate my Chloe fantasies.

I have both L4D games and they were totally worth the money.
L4D2 stopped working on my laptop after the latest update, but I'm totally down for the first one whenever. And when I'm at the desktop I can play both.

I did not like it, mainly because my online experiences only consisted of getting booted for not playing well enough. I like games when a player is only booted for excessive friendly fire, cheating, etc. Might be more fun playing with friends.
As for single player, I found it pretty boring.

Yea, it's definitely a multiplayer game. Also, I don't think you need to get both games as they are pretty much the same.
It' a fun game though, especially when played with friends so I'd recommend it with that stipulation in mind; Do you have friends to play it with? I'd personally love to play L4D2 with Syd Lexians, but I'm not sure how many people here actually still play it.

I have it for 360 and would be willing to give it another try if I were to play with some of you.
