So, I'm trying to quit smoking and I'm currently 14 hours into the attempt. Any advice? I can't chew gum because it sticks to my dentures and the patches make me nauseous. Also, filled with rage right now.

Yeah, I had a full top and bottom extraction done when I was 24. When I was sixteen, I did a faceplant through a windshield. That's why I have two plates and a few pins in my face. Back to the topic, I can't do the sunflower seeds because they get stuck in my teeth, but I'll try a pen or a straw or something. It's not so bad right now, but we'll see how it is once I go cash a check and have money in my pocket.

When I was trying to quit, biggest things that set me off were smelling it, avoid people who are going to smoke at all costs.

Also anytime I was drinking, I REALLY wanted a smoke, and most the time I would break down.

Pretty much anything activity you've associated smoking with, try to avoid doing it, so you don't trigger a craving.

I'am an sporadical smoker. I smoke now and then but most of the time i don't like to.
The hardest time to me is when people are around i really like who smoke. When this happens i start to smoke a cigarette most often.
That is my little experience with smoking. maybe it helps.

Ha, I once heard a comedian say that trying to drink without smoking is like trying to poop without peeing.

To the OP:
The thing that helped me stop smoking, though I was never really that addicted, was the cost. Try to imagine how much you have to spend on smoking, and then think about what you really get out of it.

If that fails, IDK, try masturbating when you get the nicotine craving

Wow, good advice, and a little bit of creepy advice too. I'm doing alright right now, and I figure if I can go one day without it, I can go a whole bunch of days without it. Not to mention the $7 pricetag per day or so... yeah. I think what it boils down to is that I've been smoking so long (since I was 11, I'm 29 now) that I don't really know what else to do. Guess there's no better time to figure out though, right?

I've done it before, the three day hump is no lie IMO.

First day you hate everyone.

Second day you wish they all were dead.

Third day you're contemplating doing something about it personally.

After that you should be fine.

Just tell you brain you don't like smoking anymore and that the taste disgusts you. If you break down and have like one drag, hopefully it'll taste awful and you'll be reassured of your commitment to quit (With little negative effect). Once you've gone 48 hours (Or maybe 72?) the shit will be out of your system and it'll be strictly mental at that point. If you feel cravings at that point, tell yourself to stop being a fucking pussy.

And I imagine the hardest part is going to be figuring out what to do during your coffee break or with that extra 5-10 minutes of your lunch break, so be sure to come prepared with a diversion so that you don't have all that extra time to debate with yourself whether or not you should have a smoke.

That's probably going to be one of the hardest parts. Right now my muscles are starting to tighten and I've developed a nervous tic around my right eye, but otherwise I'm doing alright. Thanks for all the moral support.

Suckers...seriously. It alleviates the oral fixation that will still be prominent well after the hump period. Once you get past a week cigarettes will taste horrible, so hopefully if you break down you just bum one instead of buying a pack.

I went a week without it but I bought a pack, it tasted like crap but I said well no sense wasting them and boom I was right back where I started. I'm still trying to quit. I moved to Skoal Pouches because A. They were cheaper, B. I didn't go through them quickly, maybe two a day, and it has severly helped the oral fixation part, that's when suckers really started to help. I still smoke occassionally when I'm drinking.

Also I thought I was going to smoke like a chimney when school was over but I've been keeping busy with VideoGames and doing home improvement stuff. Keep your mind off it as much as possible, and I would say after several days hang around someone that smokes, that way you will smell them after a smoke.

To any of you that quit, I think it is a great thing. I know it is hard, but if you really push yourself, you can do it.

You will be both physically and monetarily rewarded for your efforts.

Good luck to those trying!

The only way I was able to quit was by going on a health kick and avoiding people who smoked and situations where I would normally have a smoke.

Start running and working out or what ever works for you. Eat healthy. Once you do this for a couple of days, you won't want to smoke. This at least gets you through the first week.

Anytime I got the urge to have one and I could feel my body tense up, I tried to put that energy to something useful. I would be a heck of a lot more alert and energetic(and irritable but who cares).

You have the change things up. The hardest thing for me was knowing that I'd never have that last cigarette before bed after partying all night.

I had to stop hanging out with a lot of friends for a long time(six months or so) just because the temptation was too great. Once I started hanging out with people that didn't smoke, I actually felt weird about having one when the urge came up.

It's not that bad anymore. I still like the smell, although the reek of stale cigarettes is awful. I hope to god I never smelled like that.

Good luck and remember, I quit a ton of times in the past. The only time it worked is when I stopped justifying "one last smoke" or "only when I'm drinking".

No, I don't think I will fuck Stummies.

I believe the way my grandfather did it was very gradually.

I don't know how many you usually smoke a day, but eliminate one or two per day until you're only smoking a single cigarette every day.

When you're down to one a day, increase the amount of time between smokes by (#days only smoking 1 + 1) each day. So if you smoke at noon, the next day smoke at one, and the next day smoke at three, and so forth, increasing the time between smokes until you can go a full day without smoking and not freaking out. From there you should be detoxed enough that staying off is significantly easier.

If you need something in your mouth, I suggest finding a good hard candy or even cough drops (less sugar and some are pretty tasty.)

I don't have a whole lot of advice honestly...still have some habits I'm trying to kick myself. For what it's worth, it's a wonderful decision, and I hope it ends up paying dividends in the health department for you!

EDIT: also if anger/general pissyness gets to you, try playing L4D in commentary mode...all the zombies ignore you and you can blow the shit out of them to your heart's content. For even better results, try L4D2. NOTHING helps relieve my anger like taking a baseball bat to some asshole zombie's head. Very Happy

Maybe start working out, power walking, pushups etc... or doing something to help get your mind off of it. From my experiences I've know cold turkey is possible, but weening seems to have worked out more often.

Good luck, and have a non-smoker around to help you when you want to smoke can be really helpful, if you have a friend that can pressure you not to smoke. Find a g/f that hates smoking, and be with them 24/7 Very Happy. Or maybe call someone when you get the cravings.

Edit: I like Lord Huff and puff (not that his name is helpful here) suggestion the best. Or electronic cigs not sure how well they work.

Cold turkey is more effective than weening, conclusively. Quiting strictly of your own willpower, be it cold turkey or weening, is more effective in the long run than quitting through the use of some aid like gum or a patch. (after 6 months a large percentage of people who used quitting aids start smoking again. A small percent of those who quit alone start again)
Go science!

Makes sense, if you do it Cold Turkey you know you have control over it, if you do it with the help of aides I can imagine there may be some niggling doubt in the back of your head.

I've been smoking Swisher Sweet Little Cigars for about three months now and just ran out monday and don't get paid again until next week, so I'm not going to BS my Mom into giving me gas money that I'd just spend on the littles anyways.

So, you're not alone.
