I watch it. It is a slower show by comparison to many of the other premium channel offerings, but the story really brings you into that world and makes you want to know what is going to happen next. Martin Scorsese's influence is definitely present.
There is no way to discuss the details of the show without spoiling it since just about all events are contingent upon previous episodes.
I will say that while the local story politics are embellished for a continuous story line (including those of Atlantic City, Chicago, and NY City) they do hold true to national political history. The more you know about prohibition history, the more that the show will make sense.
It is important to understand that the crime bosses were all trying to swing large scale politics in their favor, so knowing about the world at that time really puts things in perspective.
