I'm always impressed with the Sonic community's romhacks/fan collaboration games. I dig that most of them have more of a focus on creating a fan platforming experience instead of trying to focus on bullshit difficulty ramping.
So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I like how they put the whale from Sonic Adventure in for no good reason.
If I recall correctly, it's a reskinned Sonic 2 and everybody I know who's spent some time with it says it's not very good, despite appearances. Still a heck of a project though.
I decided to give it a try and so far, it seems pretty good for a modern Sonic game.
The controls are pretty much the same as they were in Sonic 2, although it feels slightly stiffer/slower (or maybe it's just my computer, it's not a gaming-quality PC). The graphics sometimes make it hard to see where you're going and often distract you enough to bump into enemies every so often, but they do look gorgeous and the background scenery looks quite detailed (albeit a tad unmatching in certain areas). The layout is heavily borrowed from the original game but there are some differences here and there as well as an extra act. The model for Sonic is spot-on and I can't think of any better running animations so thumbs up on that.
Since it's a demo, there's quite a few things missing like starposts, a pause feature, boss battles, score tallying at the end of each act, a lives counter, and the coconut-throwing monkey badnik, but I like how it changes music, weather and time of day between acts (too bad there's only Emerald Hill Zone). I would've liked it, though, if they added a few more features like they did with Sonic 1 Megamix such as the homing attack and light speed dash as I think those modern Sonic elements fit in pretty well with classic Sonic. (Interestingly, this demo was made within the same Sonic fan community that made S1MM: Sonic Retro)
Overall, despite it not being a perfect 2.5D conversion from the Genesis games, I'd say it's worthy enough to be considered "remake" status and I would certainly trust this over whatever Sonic Team and Dimps dish out these days. I think I'll stick with Sonic 1 Megamix though.
I notice some people are having problems running this game for some reason. All I had to do after downloading and extracting the file was double-click on "Sonic Fan Remix", setup the resolution and graphics quality and I was good to go.

That looks FANTASTIC. But appearances are deceiving. Can't wait to try it.

the problem I had was that it was running very chunky. I messed with different resoloutions and graphics, and nothing helped. I'm sure it's just because vista is a memory whore. that's why my mugen crashes all the time, too.

I agree with this to an extent. I thought it was pretty good and definitely better than Sonic 4. The controls i found were a bit sluggish. It ran fine for me and the graphics were brilliant. In contrast i don't think the features like homing attack are a good idea. It would be okay if it was just the same levels and it was included but having it a part of the gameplay in which you would actually need to use it to progress in levels i disagree on.
It fucking pissed me off in Sonic 4, especially in that boss in the labyrinth zone. It took me at least 20 tries, Sonic homing attacks in and bounces off Robotnik onto the blocks and gets crushed, ever, fucking, time.

All these guys have to do to make this game great is tone down the visual clutter a bit, add some features, fine tune the controls and colors and it'll be good enough to put Sonic Team and Dimps to shame.
It's pretty sad that we buy Sonic games from Sega that turn out to be crap while fans can make better games for free in their spare time.

I think the game was pretty good. The Sonic Ultra Speed sections were, while a good concept, horrible and the whole "beastiality" subplot was completely unnecessary, but the levels were all really fun. Okay, maybe a few of Silver's levels kinda dragged on, but I really liked his playstyle.

Ha, I've been thinking of buying it for that exact same reason.

It reminds of a video I found awhile ago of Mushroom Hill in 3D. It's not a real game though.

Beastiality...?
...in a Sonic game? *faints*
ALSO:
I have played the game. I thought it was good, but there was too much detail, which as others have said, is somewhat distracting. Also, the time it takes for sonic to reach full running speed is ridiculous. This game played smoothly on my laptop on the highest detail setting at 800x600, but not the native resolution of the screen (1366x768).

The PS3 Version had massive slowdowns...when you started to run. In a Sonic game. Thats like bring up a new Contra Game with a maincharacter that has no weapon.
