So i was thinking about getting one for Christmas for like 60-70$ i believe. Are they worth it or should i just keep using generic emulation like the FC Twin. The thing is that the FC Twin isnt compatible with all NES games and the image and sound is off on alot of the games.
Anybody have one?

Dude, you answered your own question. I either use an original NES or emulation.

The Top Loader apparently doesn't have the lockout chip in it (allegedly), doesn't have AV output, and you can't use a Game Genie with it. Otherwise it's the same.

If you can swing one, I'd definitely get one. But I'm not sure it's worth the money.

I don't know too much about one of the NES clones, but if you find one with decent enough features, I say go for it.

The old one is the best way to go, methinks.

According to the nintoaster video, the lockout chip is easy enough to disable anyway.

I have both, and the only problem with the top loader is the lack of av cables. However, in my case, I have no more av units available on my tv so I use the coax to run straight to the cable. The main difference is that all the games boot right up, no shifting, no blowing. It works like a snes, much more reliable. If you want to actually play nes games with the headache of the old toaster, get the top loader. Some people complain about tiny lines in the screen but I've never been bothered by them enough to notice.

The RF signal is pretty fuzzy, but you can either mod it to have AV cables, or get super lucky and find one that Nintendo modified for customers who complained about no AV

I prefer my Top Loader to my original NES. I never have to fiddle with the games to get them to work, and it apparently plays PAL games from what I've heard, which I might try sometime in the future. Also, since I usually put my console on the floor, so I can be more casual when playing, I don't have to worry about getting it bumped and the game freezing, like I would the regular NES. So in my honest opinion, yes...it's the way to go.

Yeah i think ill wait a little bit but NES games are way cheaper then 360 and PS3 so i could get like 10-15 of them for Christmas from various websites, sounds like its worth it if you play them

I can't believe some of you guys are still using the old-model NES. I would think finding a working one of those in 2010 would be like finding the ark of the covenant.

If you're using a top loader, you're not a true NES player. You might as well just get a USB connector for your NES controller and play emulators.

Wait, so someone who grew up in the 80's and played NES all their lives, and now wants something that doesn't fuck up all the goddamn time isn't a true NES player? Your logic is lame.

Shut up, jerkface. You're probably one of those assholes who recognizes Hawaii and Alaska as states. If it didn't exist before World War 2, it doesn't count.

It outputs to a TV, is called a Nintendo Entertainment System, plays the same cartridges and uses the same controllers. What exactly defines a NES player as true?

Where exactly are you buying this from? Is it region free? I can't for the life of me find anywhere to buy a nes in Europe, even on ebay.

I want to see a US map made in January of 1912.

The US, with a Arizona shaped chunk missing out of it.

Found a map from 1911: http://cgi.ebay.com/1911-UNITED-STATES-TRADING-CENTER-WALL-MAP-RAND-MCNALLY_W0QQitemZ370455703162QQcategoryZ163077QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp5197.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D5023673518032544892

Arizona is on it, ostensibly as a territory.

If it wasn't for the lack of AV cables forcing the use of the RF connection which is fuzzy and grainy I'd say the toploader is superior, but since you have to mod it or like I mentioned get super lucky to find one Nintendo modified to have AV (which are very rare since not a lot of people complained about the lack of AV and sent them in for modification back in those days...) it's not.

Be that as it may the ZIF loader and the lockout chip crapping out don't make the original NES any better. They are both flawed from a design point if you ask me.

And the redesigned NES controller that comes with the Top Loader is crap.

Riddle me this, are there any companies out there making faithful reproductions of the actual NES hardware now that the patent or whatever expired? Every time I see some off brand console it always turns out to be the lame emulator on a chip job. If there was a famiclone like that I'd snap it up Oh yeah I forgot about the FC Twin. too bad about the games that don't work on it, any word on the chips in the carts that FC Twin type famiclones can't handle? Is it that Nintendo can't enforce the patent on NES hardware but still can on the crazy custom chips in the cart, or that the part of the hardware that works with said chips is still patented? Is it that it would be too hard to reverse engineer it? Are famiclone manufacturers just too cheap and lazy to figure it out? I want to know more! Confused

Patents in the US last 17 years (give or take). So some may have expired, some may not. I'm thinking most NES related patents are expired by now.

If I had the money and if he'd do it I'd totally pay the nintoaster dude to make me a Super Genintari, although I'd probably want something in place of the Atari, maybe a game boy.
