Right now i watching Star Trek:TNG. I'm really digging it. I'm curious as to what all of you think the best Star Trek TV series was and why. TNG gets my vote because it had Will Wheaton and Whoopi Goldburg and Patrick FUCKING Stewart (although maybe Patrick Stewart shouldn't count since TNG made him famous).
Plus Riker has an awesome beard.

To me, that's kind of a silly question and not really up for debate. I think most people will agree that TNG is the best series by far, while a few might still cling to TOS if they happened to see it when they were kids in the 60s and 70s.

Yeah, as far as which series told the best stories, had the best characters and makes for the best TV, TNG by a mile. TOS is good, and will always have a place in nerd hearts as the classic that it is, but it just can't compare.
I never really got in to DS9 or Voyager (although DS9's opening credits are among my favorite of all time), but I do have a very soft spot for Enterprise--I'd even go so far as to say its my second favorite ST series after TNG. Part of it is that I love Scott Bakula as an actor, but I also really, really love the sense of wonder the show has. In all the other series,' humanity has been in space for a long time. Even if they encounter amazing things, the sense of wonder at just *being out there* is gone. Not so in Enterprise; they're the first crew to be out that far, and all of them (especially Archer) know and love it. I find that awesome.

I've met people who *loathe* TNG and love TOS only. I don't understand why. In the movie Free Enterprise, the main characters have this opinion. I guess Captain Picard was just too nice. That and he wasn't man pretty, and couldn't feed into their latent homosexuality.
I've heard people say that DS9 was too soap opera-y, and refer to it mockingly as DS90210. The early seasons were a little meh, but the Dominion Wars were cool.

Patrick Stewart was far, far more pretty than William Shattner will ever be, at least in my humble opinion. Plus, he has that voice.
No contest. Kirk only got all the alien tail because Picard hadn't been born yet.

TNG is the best, but I probably like Voyager second.

I'll join the crowd and say that my favorite is still TNG, though I think DS9 is a very close second. The Dominion Wars were pretty damned awesome, and it was nice to see a continuous storyline going over a number of seasons, rather than a new story every episode. Voyager had some fun characters, but I think the lack of recognizable species' really hurt it for me. That, and the Kazon were just a horrible villain species. Way back in... either January or February, I think it was, I started going through all of TOS... still getting through it, got through season 3, ep 10 today. Yeah... definitely not my favorite series.
...I haven't decided yet if I'll go through Enterprise or not, though the fact that the entire show is available online, for free, is kinda tempting. ...Though, really, that's a double edged sword... It's awesome that I could watch the whole show online for free, but it's a little indicative of the quality of the show, that they're willing to give it out for free rather than selling it...

I've had heated discussions with my friends about TNG (which is what gave me the idea to start this thread). A few of my friends can't stand it at all. One of my friends also made a pretty good argument for The Animated Series being his favorite, as it had some of the most original stories and laid a lot of groundwork for ideas that were used in later shows.
Personally, I try to view the entire Star Trek saga as one show (except the movies. I didn't really like any of those {unless they had Ricardo Montalban in them]), but TNG and DS9 are my faves.

Yeah, I don't get that either. I've been watching TOS for the last week trying to see what all the hub bub is about and why so many people still love it, and I just don't see it. I find it very slow and somewhat campy, but not in a good way. I could see though if you grew up with TOS, that nostalgia factor could be fairly powerful nad make one feel as if TNG is some upstart new series.
DS9 went wrong for me when it began focusing almost every episode on religion and Bajoran bullshit as opposed to sci-fi or real character stories. The Dominion wars were cool, but not as awesome or redeeming as everyone says.
I did like Voyager though.

DS9.
I liked the idea of a crew having to face the long-term repercussions of their actions, beyond losing a red-shirted away-missions extra.
I also love a deep, engaging plot, and DS9 had plenty of it.

I think the anti-federation angle of the Dominion was an interesting concept that they pulled off pretty well. More so then the Borg, in my opinion. Though the Borg were pretty badass too.

Are you implying that DS9 fans don't watch the other series? The only one I really hate is Voyager, though I don't really have an opinion of Enterprise as I rarely watched it.
And I can't help it if the Next Gen movies helped ruin their greatness a little.
***edit***
Well, actually, are you implying it through someone's cartoon who was implying it?

I agree with this. Many people think Voyager the weakest of all the series, but I really liked the characters. They had a much more family feel then any of the other shows.

Which one had the sassy woman captain? I hated that one...
I'm a picard man myself, although I do love the cheesyness of the original, but If I want cheesyness I go to Kikida not star trek... so TNG for me!

Just the intro to Enterprise is better than the whole DS9 series. But yeah, Next Generation was the most fun, even though I'm not really a trekkie it was a damn fine show.

Enterprise started off okay, but once they started in with the Taliban, I'm sorry SULIBAN bullshit, I got really annoyed and gave up. Specifically, they did a "not all Suliban are evil" episode. Roddenberry was more subtle than that. If he had called them Brussians instead of Klingons, the original show would have never caught on.
I guess they got away from that stuff in the third season, but I had long stopped watching by then.
