So I got Black Ops today from Gamefly. I unlock level 4 and can now create my custom classes. I generally call my classes "Custom <Description>" Like Custom Spec-Ops, Custom Demolitions, and so on. I've been using this naming convention ever since the first Modern Warfare. I go to rename my class and name it Custom Assault and it says I can't sue that name because of profanity. Because of the "ASS" in assault I can't name my class that. Total fail right there. Some of the guns in the game are called "Assault Rifles" so why can't that be the name of my class? Really dumb thing to put in the game Treyarch. I haven't even played this game half an hour yet and they are already dropping the ball.

Why should it even matter, it's not like people can see what you name your classes anyway.

Not, to mention, a game that I had to turn off earlier because my kids were in the room, due to the all the profanity in the dialog.

M-Rated game, you are not allowed to swear in. Fucking brilliant.

Yeah, let's not discuss the technical merits or fun factor of the game. Let's concentrate on silly oversights.

I am confused as to why so many people keep buying the new versions of the same game while it is priced at $60.

I bought this and it arrived yesterday. Here are my thoughts.

Single player is pretty dump. I played single player for about 3 hours and i'm already 3/4 of the way through the story... that's pretty short and so far it's been some lame story about numbers. Feels like im playing fucking lost the game (and for the record i hate lost).

I had never played zombies and i found it a bit disappointing though i only played it once.

Multiplayer however is really good. The maps are better than in MW2, the guns are better, how you unlock stuff is better, generally it's better. There are some problems, i seem to be having connection issues and one time when this happened the map went back to the lobby and my game instantly froze and there was this weird ass glitch i've never seen in my life. All these numbers and letters appeared on the screen, hard reset my ps3.

Though i have read that lots of people are having problems with it, so maybe it will get patched.

Overall 7/10.

So should it have been marketed as a single player game or a multi-player game?

Agreed the story so far is "eh"

I haven't even touched the Multi yet, but the guys at work are all freaking out about it and loving it.

I have to fight for the fucking TV though to play it since the wife always wants to watch something on it instead.

I actually enjoy the CoD series, so I was okay with paying $60 for it.

I got it at the midnight release and when I got home and logged on to the multiplayer, first thing i heard was "We need some new fucking maps."

I have never shut off my Xbox faster.

One thing is the game is full of profanity, both in the single player and people cussing in multiplayer. So why block "ass" from "assault" when there is so much profanity to begin with?

Because the ESRB cannot rate online play.

Honestly though, I have no idea. That's like a porn film bleeping out swear words. It just doesn't make sense.

The Single Player Rating:
Quote:
Call of Duty: Black Ops

Platform: Windows PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Rating: Mature

Content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language

Rating summary:
This is a first-person shooter in which players control a U.S. soldier who works for the C.I.A. and participates in both well-known and secret events during the Cold War (e.g., skirmishes, stealth espionage, assassinations, and interrogations involving torture). Players use a wide variety of weapons such as pistols, rifles, machine guns, and explosives to injure/kill enemies. Combat can generate pools of blood and dismembered limbs. Players can use enemy bodies as human shields and execute them at close range. In one sequence, broken glass is placed into the mouth of a man while he is repeatedly punched, causing blood to spill from his mouth. Language such as "f**k," "b*tch," and "sh*t" can be heard in the dialogue.

So it makes sense that the single player game should have no issues with swears, I am betting that in one of the online communities that the game hooks into (Playstation/XBOX/Whatever the PC uses) there are restrictions based on the Terms of Services for those contracts. That is most likely why there would be swear filters. Just my guess.

This is wear swear filters fail when they start filtering out other words that have a swear word within like with "Assault" or "Assassin" and stuff like that.

I got the game, and I think combined with World at War, that Treyarch's latest editions together are better than Infinity Ward's (Mostly because MW2 was such a let-down for me). The art design, like WaW, creates a much more oppressive, tense atmosphere than MW2, and makes war seem a little more scary. The single-player doesn't always stick itself to one setting or idea, keeping the pace fresh and varied. The plot does what it needs to do, but the "huge" plot twist should be obvious to pretty much anyone, and it got almost frustrating when the game treated me like I would never guess it. It's also worth playing to the end just for the bonus zombie level it unlocks (I seriously can't describe how awesome it is).

The multiplayer, I have to say, is a nice improvement. I got sick of MW2's system of constantly having to watch your back, and spawn systems that would place you in the middle of the entire enemy team. Weapons are balanced (though SMG's are pretty underpowered), maps are designed with different game types in mind, and the killstreak system is much more fair and in-depth. All in All, Treyarch is on a good streak, and I'm surprised by how much I'm looking forward to more of their work.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I tried this with a custom class and had no problem making an "Assault" Class on the PS3 version.

Now that I've actually gotten into the Multiplayer, I'm enjoying it. I find it quite addicting.

I love how you can customize your player card even more, place your logos on guns, and all that good stuff.

I think the kill streak rewards are a lot more balanced, especially how they no longer count towards higher kill streaks. Nothing pissed me off more than a camper who got a Nuke quick.

I've noticed also, a LOT less Noob Tubers and RPG bullshit. Don't get me wrong, I've bumped into it, and god it pisses me off, but It's a lot more rare IMO.

I love and hate this game at the same time.

Love the setting, especially the NAM levels.

Hate the strange decision to use guns that didn't exist in the time periods. It takes away the immersion completely. Like the Russian mission in 1968 where they give you a MP5.

What drives me even more crazy, is that nobody mentions this anywhere in reviews. Yet, it is blatant throughout the whole game. And, it's not just one or two weapons, either.

Here's what I have noted throughout the game:

Keep in mind the game takes place between 1961 and 1968.

CZ-75 pistol - Created in 1975.

Mac-11 - Was not developed until 1972.

MP5K (At least, that's what it appears to be based on the foregrip) - the first MP5k Prototype with wooden foregrip was developed in 1976

Spectre M4 - was not developed until the 1980's

OTs-02 Kiparis - designed in 1976

FAMAS F1 FELIN - developed in 1978

AKS-74U - it was not developed until 1979

Steyr AUG - the prototype for the AUG was not patented until 1974 and was not introduced into service until 1977

Heckler & Koch G11 - was not developed until the 1980's

SPAS-12 - did not enter production until 1979

GE M134 Minigun - Completely fictional. There has never been a handheld model, except in movies such as T2 and Predator.

115A1 AWSM (called L96A1 in game) - entered British Military service in 1982

Walther WA 2000 - wasn't manufactured until 1982

PSG-1 - was not developed until the mid 1970's

I think the gun messups can be attributed to either "Well, Black Ops guys get them early" or "This would be fucking boring if it was just another m4/ak47 game." I'm kind of a gun enthusiast, but I can forgive them for the sake of historical fiction/plain fun.

Most of these don't even fall into the "spec ops can get any gun they want" fall back. Most of these guns didn't even exist on paper, let alone in a usable prototype form.

And, what's wrong with M16s and AK-47s?

I mean, really, while you play the game their are craploads of guns to pick up, but most people are only going to use maybe three or four favorites.

Besides. Are you saying this is a too limited list of available weapons for the time period:

I was playing in some multiplayer games and found a bunch of the guns that didn't even exist and though they felt out of place. The ones that really felt odd to me were the FAMAS and AUG.
