When ZIF pins got bent, did it ruin the system, the cartridge, or both?
Secondly, can 91% Isopropyl alcohol be used to clean NES carts?
Thirdly, is there any way to coerce an uncooperative NES into working?

It usually just ruined the system, however, you can easily get new 72-Pin ZIF connectors which I believe fix the problem, or you could just use a Game Genie and not use the codes.
Yes, you can use Isopropyl alcohol, and there are many detailed guides. Just only use it when you really need it.
Pretty much everything explained here, or you could deactivate the 10NES chip (on the console) if you're getting the blinking red light issue. There are many detailed guides for all of the above on the Internet.

clean the carts with a half alcohol and water mix, you don't want to corrode them. Also, just buy a new pin connector, its a very easy fix.

How can I tell if it's the NES chip malfunctioning or a connector problem?

Ebay, or I think I have one lying around you could have. I use to rebuild "broken" NES and sell them on ebay. They are fairly cheap if you go the ebay route though.

Usually, it's both (10NES Auth. Chip and the connectors), this is because the bad connectors apparrently delay or scramble the lockout code being sent around, you can either find a way to disable the NES's lockout chip, or fix the ZIF, or both.

Or, you could save yourself the headache and splurge on 50-60 bucks to get a Top Loader. Top Loader = No Problems.

Steal the patent and look at the code, then claim you reverse-engineered around it.

Don't bother trying to disable the 10NES chip and all that. It's not smart to screw with circuitry unless you know what the hell you're doing, and if you knew what the hell you were doing, you wouldn't have made this topic.
Replacing the pin connectors and cleaning the games will work wonders for the blinky-blinky without nearly as much effort or technological expertise. I did it, and I still need to recite a rhyme to know which way to turn a screwdriver.

Well a black Wii is just a Wii, except black. It's the same iconic design. I might try the lockout chip thing. Or for 12.99, I could get that third party pin connector that says it won't crap out on you like the original hardware. But a whole new system in a hideous design? Meh.

Granted, I like to the iconic style of the NES as well, but that doesn't change the fact that it is flawed. For example, I replaced my 72 pin, disabled my lock out chip and still have problems with certain games unless they are cleaned to white glove standards. That's why I keep my top loader handy, in case I actually ever want to play my games without spending half an hour wiggling them, cleaning them ect. Each his own I guess.
