Man, this is an extreme bummer. I feel like he's a major part of Capcom and we'll see them suffer to a degree without him. I'm really worried about Mega Man now. Once the creator of Final Fantasy left, it seems like Square went apeshit with the series. Quality control out the door and spin-offs out the ass. I know that's the pot calling the kettle black when Mega Man is probably the king of spin-offs, but at least most of them are good. I think I can get where he's coming from though, especially what he says about developers in Japan. These days I'm so disenchanted with games and the few I get excited about are usually disappointing. Something has definately changed and not just me. I find it strage how the more life-like the games get, the more lifeless they feel.

Very true. This sucks, but perhaps he will move on and create something fresh and awesome with someone else.

Nintendo should hire him! Inafune + Miyamoto would equal awesomeness.

According to Wikipedia, he's made a lot of critical comments about Japanese developers in general, claiming that they are not as innovative as developers in other regions. Now, if there's an exception to that rule, it's Nintendo. I also think he's wrong, he just doesn't see it as much from foreign developers. Activision, Atari, Ubisoft, and Electronic Arts crank out a LOT of garbage every year. A LOT.
In regards to non-Japanese developers, I don't know where he'd want to go.

First off, yea, I think the Japanese have the most creative game developers in the world.
Second, I could see him starting his own small company, I am sure he has the capital to do it, not to mention I am sure he will still receive royalties for all of his Megaman shit.

Possible, but I think it's more likely that he'll take the Itagaki route and get his own game studio and staff at a major developer.

Isn't that the story behind Clover?

Ex-Clover staff became Seeds. Then they merged with another development group called ODD to become Platinum Games, makers of Madworld and Bayonetta.

Can't forget recent Platinum title Vanquish. Well, you can, if you want a plot. But from what I played, it's fast lead-laden fun. But Inafune at Nintendo does seem very appealing. Or in an alternate universe, he and Kojima join forces and take already twitchy-looking MGS: Rising to a ridiculous level of epileptic glory.

His design for the new MML3 heroine came in dead last on the polls. Coincidence?
Anyway, WHY would he leave during development of a game that he's been fighting to make for years, that he wanted to make sure was "very, very good"? I hope it won't be the first dud under an Inafune-less Capcom because of it.
This'd also be a good time to put his money where his mouth with his "Japanese game development is dead lol, West is the future" attitude and start his own company in the US or Europe if he's so inclined =p

I can almost imagine this scenario happening:
CAPCOM staff: Alright, we've finally given you your wish and made a new game out of one of the least popular creations you've had a hand in. Even though your heroine polled as the least interesting.
Inafune: You just don't understand why it's my favorite.
CAPCOM: No charge shot or sliding?
Inafune: Screw you guys, I'm leaving.

Haha, that's pretty funny. I could see something like that not being very far off. It really is strange for him to suddenly quit just when he gets the chance to work on this game.

Gunpei Yokoi quit/resigned/got fired because he was held accountable for the failure of the Virtual Boy. That's the exact opposite of why Inafune quit. He was complaining that there is no accountability at Capcom, you get paid the same regardless of whether or not your game succeeds.

I was simply implying that once you are on bad terms with the Japanese video game industry, you tend to have an unfortunate accident soon after. I edited my first post to alleviate any further misunderstandings.

It is a pretty interesting read. If it wasn't a prepared stunt, then that interviewer has some skills. Keiji even cleared up a lot of things that confused me, like how high budget games that don't sell well still get sequels. Thanks for the link.
