Well, I'm losing my job at the end of October. My store is shutting down on 10/30. They have offered to help with job placement within the company, but the only positions being offered are part time, they could be anywhere, and you'll be lucky to get 20 hours a week. I'm entitled to 9 weeks of severance, so I'll probably take that, since it's more money than trying to stay with the company. After that, who knows? I'm freaking out.

Wow. That is some bad news. I wish you luck with the job hunt in this economy. It took me about a year of looking before I got my current job. Maybe you should take the job offer, as the job hunt could take longer than 9 months.

I'd be ok with a few banners. Its nice not seeing them, but if it came down to looking at them or you not eatting/making rent. I'd be quite alright with looking at the eye sores, or even clicking them.

Well sir you have my condolence, I would say as others pimp out the site with ads. Also join networks that pay or any such thing.

Syd,
First up, take a deep breath. It is terrible to be out of work, but you will get through it.
I have been on unemployment before and it is horrifying when you begin, but as long as you start looking for work right away, you'll end up ok.
The most important thing you can do right now is begin to compile references and update your resume. Don't procrastinate these things thinking that the severance will carry you.
After you get your "paperwork" in order, you need to figure out what you want to do. Do you want the same type of job? Do you want a different career? Don't worry about what is available, positions for all sorts of jobs come and go regularly and you'll end up with something eventually, but it would be best if that something were in a career path that interested you.

I'd be interested in the "click to continue" ads. That appear once every 24 hours.

Why? They feel like speed bumps, they interrupt content, and they only happen every 24 hours.
Regular banner ads are as easily ignored, but at least you get more page views with them and they don't break the flow of content.

I'm sure you've mentioned it plenty of times, but what do you do, Syd?
My condolences on the layoff. You're not alone, these days.

Sorry to hear that, man. GPF gave some good advice on how to start. If you still have a job until 10/30 and you'll get another 9 weeks of severance, that gives you until Jan. 1st to find a position. Start looking now. Maybe you can get a seasonal position at any store to help until you find something more permanent. That way you'll have the severance plus the seasonal work to try and save up for a bit.
Also, would you qualify for unemployment? You've been paying into unemployment insurance for years, I'm sure, so no reason not to take if it's available while you look.
As for generating a little money through advertising, the 'Click to Continue' ones wouldn't bother me at all, nor would banner ads at the tops/bottoms of pages. Do what you have to do to get through this tough time.

I'd click the hell out of some ads to make sure you have food in the cupboard. Look around for call center work, it ain't fun, but it usually has high turn over due to how stressful it is so it's not to hard to snag a position, and can be a decent temporary job until something better comes along.

I left my other job recently, as I moved, and am currently in a rut trying to find new work myself. It's quite brutal, fuck the economy, very few places seem to be hiring.

Sorry to hear about the jobs, guys. I had to move to get a good job, and that was BEFORE the economy tanked. That's why I try extra hard to behave now.

Yes, but I would prefer not to take it, unless I can take it while collecting severance. My understanding is that the severance might be paid in a lump sum, which would make collecting unemployment simultaneously easier. On its own, Unemployment is basically dick. It's somewhere between 1/2 and 1/3 of what I'd making now. Also, I don't quite understand how unemployment works, but I've been told it comes out of my Social Security. So any money I collect now is less money I'd have for retirement.
Attempting to monetize the site might be the way to go.

Oh Syd, don't you realize, there won't be any Social Security for you to collect when you reach retirement age.
Also, at least your given a month's time to potentially line something else up, that is a pretty decent notice.

It does not come out of your Social Security benefits later in life. They are two separate entities. Unemployment benefits are technically a form of insurance. You have been paying into that insurance your entire working life; it's on your pay stub. Receiving unemployment when you qualify does not affect your future social security benefits. Being unemployed, in general, may lower your Social Security benefits later because you're not paying into it, obviously. But if it's for a short period of time, you likely won't see any effect.
A little background, I worked in insurance for a few years (and I still maintain my clients accounts) and I worked closely with Social Security, Medicare, Health insurance, etc. I have helped people who were receiving both Social Security AND unemployment at the same time. It all depends on if you qualify. Still, it would be a good idea to look into this yourself because I do think it's a viable option.
I realize that unemployment is going to be far less than what you made while working, but it can be a decent stopgap while you look for other employment. I am not very familiar with how severance packages affect unemployment benefits, but I do not believe it would alter your eligibility to receive unemployment as soon as you are laid off.
And yeah, monetize the shit out of this site. It's been free for years so it's probably about time you at least made a few bucks off of it. I know it wouldn't be enough to pay all your bills, but if it helps I say go for it.

Don't worry, people lose jobs all the time.
You have a degree and you weren't terminated for crappy work, so economy as bad as it is you've got a better chance that the majority of shiftless losers out there.
You may have to cut that long hair though.

Unemployment does not come out of your social security. It's something employers pay for. Absolutely get it.
Being unemployed for a long time may affect it, but certainly not the insurance payments.
