Deadline.com:

20th Century Fox has teamed with Walden Media to buy rights to Bil Keane's venerable syndicated comic strip The Family Circus, and they've hired Bob Hilgenberg & Rob Muir to script a live action feature. John Baldecchi and Stacy Maes are producing. Bil Keane started the strip in 1960 and continues to generate the single-panel script with his son Jeff. It is the most widely syndicated strip in the world, according to King Features. A number of studios competed for the rights for what is envisioned as a multiple quadrant family franchise. Though several members of the Keane clan have become film animators, Bil Keane resisted making a film deal all these years. Producer Baldecchi spent two years trying to track them down. He got Keane's number, but never had his messages returned. One day, Baldecchi called and Keane picked up the phone. He made enough of an impression that Keane introduced the producer to his son Jeff. Soon they had an agreement to move forward and then studios got involved. I'm told the deal was six figures against seven-figures and went to Fox and Walden, which are partnered in the upcoming The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Among other projects, the writers worked with Baldecchi on their comedy script Scared Guys, about a couple of agoraphobic roommates who have to venture out of their building and across the street to prevent a murder.

I'll only watch this if Jack Nicholson plays "Jeffy."

I dunno. If it's done right, it could be good. Not the sort of the movie, I'd want to watch by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm simply not into heartwarming G/PG family-oriented kiddy movies.

If they stay true to the source material, I'll be okay with this. But I get the horrible feeling it's going to end up being some wacky, zany piece of shit that owes more to Cheaper By The Dozen and Daddy Daycare than it does to the original strip.

People I don't want to see as the dad:

Jim Carrey
Will Ferrell
Ryan Reynolds
Robert Downey Jr.
Anyone from The Hangover

Hollywood is a dry well of ideas for years. We get it already.

Then again, if they could play it as a parody the same the Brady Bunch movie was made...

If they stay true to the source material, the movie will be completely unwatchable. The source material is just a bunch of one-off jokes and sorta-jokes with kids acting like kids. There's absolutely nothing whatsoever to make a movie out of.

What would the plot be? Would it follow the kids around with a dashed line trail as they go on
G-rated adventures though the neighborhood? Or would Not Me cause a bunch of hijinks that gets the kids in trouble, setting the stage for them to prove the parents wrong in the classic "Kids are smart/adults are dumb" device? Or maybe grandad's ghost haunts the family and they have to take him down ghostbusters style.

I'm kind of shocked as to how much I know about this terrible comic.

Watching the animated movies alone was hard enough:

Just imagine these on live action format...

I'll only watch this if it's in 3D.

Imagining a world without Family Circus makes mine. If only John Lennon sang a song about THAT.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

Are you a big Family Circus fan or something? Afraid they're going to rape your childhood?

I'm almost inclined to believe the script was already there, and they figure billing it as Family Circus would increase sales.

You're way behind, Klimb. Michael Bay already violated my childhood and there's no going back. The reason I was going to do that is because Family Circus is totally devoid of any humor or intellect but I know that a ton of assholes will think it's charming and go see it and then I'll have to listen to them coo about it at work.

Whatever, this is just another in a long line of comic strip movies. Garfield sucked. I only know that because...ummm...err... I thought "A Tale of Two Kitties" was going to be something else entirely. Next, they'll shave that fat kid's head from "Two and a Half Men" to play Charlie Brown. "Hagar the Horrible" will star John Goodman and Kathy Bates. "Beetle Baily" will star the ghost of Bob Denver.

Doesn't surprise me hollywood would do this. 'Let's take the worst, most unintelligent, audience insulting comic strip ever and make a movie out of it hence making millions off the millions of morons that actually watch it.' Isn't that what hollywood is all about? I've given up on the human race. The fucking obituaries are funnier than Family Circus!

You're talking about the Garfield movies now, right?

Okay, seriously, I like The Family Circus. It has some charm to it. Sure, it's not "funny", but it usually makes me chuckle, and who says all comics need to be funny anyways?

It just makes for a horrible movie idea.

I concur with the "No" and add "Why?" Haven't Marmaduke and Garfield taught us that comic strip based movies are fucking terrible?
