The owner of the Segway company died in a freak accident on Sunday -- after riding one of the company's trademark two-wheeled scooters off a cliff and into a river, the British press reports.

Jimi Heselden, one of England's richest men, was pulled from the River Wharfe in Boston Spa, near Leeds in northern England, local police said.

"Officers were called to the incident around 11:40 a.m. following a call from a member of the public," the West Yorkshire police said in a statement.

"Mr. Heselden, who is from Thrope Arch, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics," the statement read. Police said that the incident was "not believed to be suspicious."

According to London's Telegraph, a police spokesman said the 62-year-old Heselden had "fallen from the cliffs above on a Segway."

One of the devices, a battery-powered scooter first introduced in 2002, was found in the area where the body was recovered. It was an off-road model, the Daily Mail reports.

The owner of Hesco Bastion, which manufactures, among other things, blast walls that help protect troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, was a noted philanthropist who recently gave away more than $15,000,000 to charity.

His company bought the New Hampshire-based Segway firm in 2009.

Holy crap. I was waiting for a link to the Onion or something, but this is genuinely wrong.

Also, I thought Dean Kamen (sp?) was the man behind the Segway.

Dean Kamen invented the device, but Jimi Heselden is the company owner.

Just saw this... wow. That probably couldn't have happened in a weirder fashion unless it'd fallen on him when he landed.

Back to the Future: Part 2 was on this weekend. He probably got confused and forgot he wasn't riding a hover-segway.

Hey Heselden you bojo! Those Segways don't work off cliffs! Unless you've got power!

The only way that this is a complete death is if 200 naked women on Segways chased him off the cliff. #obscureMontyPythonreference

I think, well at least I hope, that people are laughing at the irony. The actual death itself is tragic and sad, but that isn't what we are really talking about here in this thread.

It's funny in the same way Steve Irwin's death was.

Tragedy can be funny.
