Lucasfilm announced Wednesday that the "Star Wars" films will be converted into 3-D and rereleased theatrically. All six films of the saga, beginning with episode one, "The Phantom Menace," and concluding with episode six, "Return of the Jedi," are expected to be released in theaters in 2012.
Lucasfilm and distributor Twentieth Century Fox have not yet set a release date. Industrial Light & Magic is supervising the conversion process, which it promises will be "cutting edge." Many previous conversions of films shot in 2-D, such as "Clash of the Titans," have drawn criticism for cheapening 3-D.
John Knoll, visual effects supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic said a proper conversion to 3-D "is a matter of taking the time and getting it right." |
Uh oh. Let's hear it.

Heh.
Why stop there though? Let's get the full Star Wars experience. Add Smell-O-Vision, too. Do tan tans really smell worse on the inside than the outside? What's it smell like to be pushed up against Jabba. Dagobah looks like it could be pretty rank as well.
Or how about temperature controls? Turn the temperature of the theater up about 50 degrees during the light saber fight between Obi Wan and Anakin on Mustarfar at the end of Episode III.
Fuck it, add neck clamps on the audience so when Vader does his force choke on someone they feel it as well.
Come on, Lucas! There is so much more money to be made here.

That's it, let's just remake everything in 3D, after we colorize everything of course.

Or the next innovation.

Bullshit, you can complain about any other re-releases and you would be right but this should be no surprise from lucas. He already has done the modern equivalent of colorizing star-wars by going back and re-editing it.

Yeah, I always wondered why that never broke out of America's Funniest Home Videos...

You are perfectly allowed to do so, but when a dog that has bitten you over 6 times does it again you can't act all surprised. The original series lost it's magic years ago when it was cut to shit and re-released several times.
Releasing in 3D is no more gimmicky then re-editing special effects in the background.
I take back the "people can't complain" remark but star wars is not the cause to take up in the "don't touch our movies" front.

I'd like to say that I'm not pissed about this. This series can't really be raped much more than it already has.
I will probably go see whichever one they release first (Ep IV?) in 3D to see how it looks. If I dig it, I'll likely see them all. Besides, I like watching these on the big screen.

Blah blah blah blah, Lucas raped my childhood, blah blah blah blah, Star Wars is meaningless and dead to me now, blah blah blah...
Whatever chumps, I'll be seeing each of these about 20 times in theatres when they hit.
And if you really want to talk Lucas ruining Star Wars, let's talk about the CGI Clone Wars show.

If you'll pay for it, they'll make it. See: Halo.
I'm fine with them just on DVD for me until I can get a blu-ray, and even then I don't know.
But simple economics now is driving the Star Wars franchise, and not the desire to create.

Ah yes. I read another report later in the day that they may actually start with Episode IV. I got a little mixed up.
In my opinion starting with Episode I is a bad idea. It is considered the worst movie of the six by most people, so the sales may be underwhelming. Then again, it likely won't curb the release of any more of them so wtf do I know.
Yeah, BZ, I don't care myself. If people don't want to see them, they obviously don't have to. I like that I'll have the opportunity to see these on the big screen again. If the 3D is just terrible (which I doubt it will be), then I may skip the later releases. Otherwise I'm in for all six.

Since Episode I, II, and III had a large amount of footage created using digital means, those portions can be rerendered in 3D. I imagine they will get perfect quality with any of the artificial environment.
Episodes IV, V, and VI on the other hand don't have original footage that is digitally created. They need to be synthetically updated. I don't think it will ever look quite right in 3D.
I will most likely see these if they have a decent run in the theater. I am not going out to see a 2 day showing or something like that. But if they are out for 3-4 weeks I'll catch them when they aren't as busy.

I'd rather scratch my small intestine with a screwdriver. IV-VI might be worth watching if they don't make me want to puke, but I and III were both bad enough to make me fall asleep in the theatre and II was known, in my circle of friends, as "five minute Yoda fight scene". I'll save sixty-seventy dollars and say pass.

Hasn't the original trilogy been raped enough? LEAVE IT ALONE, GEORGE! You can pile drive your craptastic prequel set into the dirt for all I care. Leave Luke outta this.

This, and, if you don't think it's a good idea, just don't go and see them. Problem solved.

Yea, but apparently these aren't gonna start coming out until 2012, and even then only one a year.
By that logic we won't get Empire and Jedi until 2016 and 2017 respectively. By that time I expect 3D to be pretty perfected, shit it will probably be glasses free by that point.

I was never that offended by any of the editing they made to the original movies. Most of it is kind of stupid, maybe. But for the most part I can just dimiss it.
The only real exception for me is that damn musical number with the singing gremlin they added into Jedi, in Jabba's palace. That was a fucking disgrace.
