I find myself unconvinced that 3D will ever truly become mainstream so long as the glasses are required, no matter how bad the Panasonic's and Samsung's of the world want to shove it down our throats.

Now if they can make it work without glasses......we shall see.

Companies have been trying to do shit like this behind closed doors for years, and yes I do agree with your assessment on 3D.

Technology for glasses free 3D will eventually get there, and the prices will slowly come down, and when it does, everyone will want it.

The 3DS is the first step in this direction.

I've seen a glasses-free 3D parallax barrier display, but it's pretty wonky. Feels a bit like looking at a cheap hologram. Hopefully Toshiba is working on something better than that. Smile

Yeah but isn't the only reason the 3DS works is the small size of the screen? I was under the impression that if they try to cram whatever is in the glasses in to the entire screen it gets distorted unless you are sitting squarely in front of it, so that maybe 1 out of 3 or 4 people watching the screen can actually tell what is going on... Confused

It's only a matter of time before some company innovates glasses free 3D, so it's not surprising that they are already moving in that direction.

Sorta, the 3DS works because you have to view it at a very specific angle or the 3D illusion is broken.

That's why the technology is so ideal for the 3DS, it's easy (not to mention natural and comfortable) to hold a hand-held in the optimal position.

Using the same technique on a big screen is virtually impossible, I really think Nintendo has once again struck gold with the 3DS, I heard the effect is quite compelling from a buddy of mine whom was at E3.

After everything goes 3D, then you're going to have screenless 3D television where it just projects into a central viewing area. Swear to God, except for the whole magic/cryptozoology thing, we're headed straight for a future pretty much like Shadowrun. And if enough hinky crap goes down during 2012, we might get the supernatural part too. Exciting.

3D only interests me because it could open some doors as far as porn goes.

The Super Hadron Collider should take care of the supernatural part. Pity, I'd much prefer the future turns to Battletech instead.
