I randomly get a message every so often that this program has crashed:

dllhstt3g.exe

I think it is the result of an incomplete spyware/malware removal.

Syd, we need the full error message.

Also, when will you be getting Windows 7 and ending so many of your computer nightmares.

Seeing how he can't even emulate N64 on his computer I would think he lacks the system requirements for Windows 7. Putting the newest OS on a POS doesn't make it better. Laughing

I think Syd could be right. The incomplete removal of certain programs will cause that message to appear. Either that, or he has too many malicious porn files downloaded... That's only half a joke. It did happen in my more... lonely years to a decent Dell I had. Also, what OS are you running?

I am on Vista still and just started to get used to it, is 7 worth upgrading? I have heard it was, but also heard conflicting messages (like this).

I am running XP, which is what was out when I bought this. I don't buy operating systems. Only suckers buy operating systems. You buy a computer and you get the OS free.

I've never seen the point in upgrading my OS either. The basic functionality is the same. I still have a laptop with Windows ME.

Yea, same Syd, upgrading my OS just seems like wayy too much effort. I will just wait until I purchase a new CPU to upgrade to a new OS.

By that time we should be at like Windows 10 or so. Hah.

It's totally worth upgrading. Yeah, the system will have bugs and blue screen now and then, that's kinda expected, but it's a HUGE upgrade from Vista.

Syd, when did you become Mel Gibson? I have never met someone who liked being tortured so much.

The cost of the OS is cheap by comparison to the amount of time you spend getting fucked by the one you have. Also, you pay for the OS license when you buy a new machine. It is simply bundled in the cost of the total purchase. It wasn't free. Microsoft's stock price shows you that it wasn't fucking free...

Find someone who works for a college or University. They usually have a license to provide free copies of Windows XP, Vista and 7 for faculty and staff.

What's the real benifit of upgrading? I have Vista at home and at work, some machines have XP while others have 7. I pretty much do the same stuff on them all and I don't notice any difference in what I have to do. The only real difference I notice from going back and forth is that shit is harder to find when I'm doing maintenance or trouble shooting.

I have only seen Windows 7 crash on me once, and that's was due to an nvidia driver. I can bet GPF and myself probably dive much further into the OS than most of you guys.

If you are getting BSODs in 7, most likely it's not 7's fault but something else casuing it.

Interface Speed is the largest noticeable difference.

While processing overhead of Windows 7 is higher than XP, the hardware you have should be better in most cases since it will usually be newer, so the overhead is covered.

In most cases however, even on better hardware that covered the difference in processing power, Vista felt sluggish. This was due to poor interface programming and programmers putting the application load ahead of the Window interface presentation.

Windows 7 completely flipped the timing and after optimizing the interface loading procedure for windows that open, the apps appear to be "snappier". In addition they tweaked the OS so that it performs more efficiently and therefore does get more bang for the buck from the processor than Vista.

The second major thing that Windows 7 has over Vista is user population. The population of Windows experts has moved away from Vista and so has the industry as a whole. This means, you will get better tech support for Windows 7 even if it were no better than Vista.

The third most visible change is the physical interface being cleaner and more intuitive. Vista was better than XP when interface was considered, however because of its speed issues it felt worthless. Windows 7 corrected the speed and continued to improve the interface. The wireless network connection utility is a huge update.

The fourth most visible change is network speed. Windows 7 is faster. Noticeably faster. If all other conditions are the same, Windows 7 is better at handling network traffic. That means you get files and webpages faster.

The fifth most visible change is driver stability. Vista had some trouble with drivers. Even though most vista and 7 drivers are similar and or the same, now companies have recognized that 7 is very important as an OS and are developing their drivers with top priority and quality.

We can continue with DirectX/Graphics improvements, the task bar, multitasking stability, and lower system requirements. I should also mention that Hibernation actually works now.

If I had to rank operating systems based on usefulness right now here would be the rank, from best to worst.

As of 8/24/2010

Windows 7 Home Premium and Higher (Nothing is currently better)
OS X 10.6
OS X 10.5
Windows Vista SP2 (Not as bad as you thought..)
Windows XP SP3
Windows Vista SP1
OS X 10.4
Linux... all of them
Windows XP SP2 (have fun with those viruses you unsupported suckers)
Windows ME (Placed here to just to show how bad the original vista was)
Windows Vista Gold (Yes, it was that shitty)

What about Windows 95 I loved that operating system : ).

It depends how long you plan to keep the system, and how nice the perks are on the new OS. If you're doing fine with your current OS for everything you do then keep it. When you buy a new computer it could make sense then to pay a bit more for the newest OS. Directly or indirectly. Is your problem still present, or you good?

I know CCleaner is a small free optimizer I use that can also fix basic registry issues. It's a popular program.

I don't understand who you are talking to here. Did you just merge sidewaydriver and Syd's requests into one answer?

Please do not run CCleaner's registry tool. Its file cleanup utility is fantastic, but the registry cleaner can hose your system. All registry cleaners can. Don't use them. Even if it fixes this problem, it might cause one 10x worse.

The comment was a response to the issues raised in regards to OS upgrades in general. The question was directed towards, Syd.

I personally haven't had a problem with it, and I don't think it's common for it to do that since if a bunch of people (a noticeable percent) were experiencing that problem then CCleaner wouldn't include that feature. I would wager based on that reasoning we're talking less than 1% of people have experienced what you're saying as a result of CCleaner. CCleaner can always make a back up and restore your changes. I don't think CCleaner even attempts to fix beyond basic registry issues. If you have a more direct and safer solution GPF feel free, that's what I've done in the past.
