hey folks. i wondered a couple of times why virtual reality games/consoles are so unpopular. I remember playing Virtual Reality Games at an Arcade, but that was about 10 years ago. To me i looks like that this technology gets ignored by the videogame industry. But why? Except for the Virtual boy, i'am not aware of any console that used virtual reality technology. I didn't make this thread to complain about anything, I'm just thinking that the future of videogames lies in virtual reality because it brings gaming expierence to a higher level. So were there any consoles that had that feature? or is anyone planning on such a console?

The number one reason was because the headgear involved caused eyestrains and neck problems in most cases.
There was a short lived VR helmet for the genesis advertised in game mags and several arcade games did take advantage of them.

I think the technology hasn't matured enough for it to be viable.

When I went to Virginia Beach as a kid, they had this one set up called "Dactyl Nightmare" (YouTube it) and it was pretty groovy at the time. Once you kind of realized how lame the gimmick was though, you got bored and usually quit before your time was even up.

I'm just not convinced that any technology requiring people to own and wear extensive pieces of equipment can survive on a large scale. That's why I think 3DTV won't take off until they find a way to make it work without the glasses.

Virtual Boy, the console considered Nintendo's only failure, used goggles. I want one. :/
