I have finally beat Impossible Mission on the Commodore 64!!!
"I finally beat you, Dr. Atombender!!! You are now my little bitch!"
I grew up playing this game, loving it, but never getting anywhere close to completing it. I guess in my case it truly lives up to it's name.
Has anybody else gone back and beat a game that they couldn't when they were kids?

Yes, and ironically it was the NES "Mission: Impossible".
... Damn it...
Also about two weeks ago I finally went back and got the infinite ammo face paint and stealth camo in MGS3. That was a slow weekend...

I went back and beat my dick, because I could never win at masturbation as a kid
Just kidding
I went back and beat Hexen not too long ago. I could never beat it before because I sucked and was afraid, also the puzzles were tough.

I remember when I downloaded a nintendo emulator my sophomore year in college, it led to me finally beating Maniac Mansion. I remember being very happy, which confused the heck out of my buddies in the dorm.

When I was a kid, I played Descent quite often, for literally hours on end. But I never got around to beating it. Later on I sat down and played it, and punched those stupid robots in the face. Part of the problem was probably the fact that the game is simply so huge and I couldn't maintain an attention span long enough to finish all 27 missions (and the 3 secret ones if I could find them). Back in the day I would spend so much time exploring the levels that it could take several hours before I finished them. The second time through was considerably easier, if only because I remembered where everything was, could effectively strafe and move and fire, and realized that there was no point in hunting down every last concussion missile laying around the level.
I never did beat Descent 2, however...

A game that I STILL have to beat is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The memory battery in the copy that I had already died before I had it, so any progress I made was erased after I turned of my N64. I'll get it on the Wii Virtual Console, along with Goldeneye.

I haven't beaten Metroid II: Return of Samus. I pretty much lost the will to try after I made it to the last boss but didn't pick up enough missile boxes throughout the game.

I've never beaten Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System. I came close when I was a kid, but never completed the game. I have a gap in my soul from that. I have to hook up the SMS now and start a game. Lassic shall be my bitch.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us. |

I made it to the last level, and possibly the last boss. If you had infinite continues I could do it.

I've been delving more into games recently as I have no job. I recently got through Warsong for Genesis, which I couldn't do when I was a kid. Of course, when I was younger, I couldn't comprehend most of the numbers. I just played through Lufia for the first time, as I've only played the sequel. I'm currently trying to go through Prince of Persia for the SNES without cheating.
Things that I've done more recently that I couldn't do when I was younger:
- Beat Bubble Bobble straight through on Super mode when taking the Secret Road and beating the boss when he's red.
- Beat Shadowgate and Deja Vu.... still couldn't get through Uninvited.
- Beat Clue for SNES on the highest difficulty.
Things I'm looking forward to doing between notating more music:
- Beat Road Rash 3 straight through without having to reload via save state or password.
- Beat Prince of Persia without cheating.
- Complete one of the many Bass fishing games I've played over the years.
- Play through Rygar in one sitting
I'm sure there are other things I'm going to do, but I can't think of them right now and I have to leave to go shopping.
EDIT:
When I was playing through Lufia, I took two snapshots because I thought they were interesting.
Not making enough in ECW, Blue Meanie had to take side jobs, but unfortunately working for the Sinistrals didn't pay off too well.
... and Zero is Forte? Seems as though the "sin" in RegalSin's name was short for Sinistral as he apparently descended from them... though lacking in the cool powers department.

i got the SMS back in 88, and never beat one game for it. I definitely need to buy a system and try choplifter again. The SMS games were nearly fucking impossible. Did anyone ever figure out how to play teddy boy? What about F-16 fighting falcon?

Now that's impressive. I don't think I've ever beat any of the Genesis Road Rashes, and I played those games obsessively.

I finally beat Battletoads which I always wanted to beat as a kid. I'm actually surprised how fast I was able to do it, I was able to beat it in about a week and a half with only playing once or twice every day, and that is one tough game. Me and my friend beat Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team on multi-player a couple months ago too, which was awesome because we had been trying to beat that game for years. When we actually beat it we did it without either of us getting a game over which was also surprising. Damn...they really need to make a new Battletoads or Double Dragon game....

F-16 Fighting Falcon was awesome. The problem was that SEGA tried to make a realistic flight simulator on a system with a D-Pad and 2 buttons.
You know now that I think about it, I don't think I beat any SMS games either. I remember I was really sick for a few days when I was a kid and I sat down and made it to the end of "My Hero", but I couldn't beat the final boss.
Wait, I did beat "Rambo" with a friend!
