Has anyone other than Syd, Jeebus, and myself seen this movie yet? I saw it earlier today and was fairly impressed. I won't spoil anything major, but the RE5 cameos were numerous and excellent. Kinda makes me wonder why they haven't done anything for RE4 yet. It takes a bit to get going, but when it actually does its very much like how it was in the first film and still awesome.
*MINOR SPOILERS*
The change in director was apparent, because in the first 20 minutes he erased a major plot point from Extinction. Also Wesker's actor was just phenomenal in portraying him especially towards the end in which I half expected button commands to start popping up on the screen.
*END SPOILERS*
Also, stay for the credits to see the setup for the next film. Very, VERY interested in the next movie now!

I didn't enjoy it. It doesn't help that I haven't played the games or seen the other movies, but I went with a friend who knows everything about it. And he said it was a disappointment. I wasn't too impressed either, purely from a professional basis. Some of the action was pretty satisfying, though.

You don't need to have played the games to enjoy the movies. Though seeing the previous movies (except for the CGI Degeneration) would've probably helped.

I saw it and I thought there was a serious shortage of zombie fighting. I've only played the first RE video game so maybe they eventually got away from zombie fighting too but it seem like the movie was mostly about Heroes VS Umbrella Corp and I really wish it had more Heroes VS Zombies. IMO, a Resident Evil movie should be all about zombies.

The 3D was good, the action was good. The acting and plot were meh.
Fun Fact: a sequel hasn't been greenlit yet, and the movie ends on a cliffhanger. Can you say hubris?

Paul and Milla already announced that due to being number #1 in the box office, they are beginning work on the next sequel.
But, yeah, they have placed endnotes for sequels in every RE movie so far.

Does anybody else feel these movies may actually be hurting Milla Jovovich's career in the long term? I think if she keeps doing all these Resident Evil movies she will just be passed over by directors for more substantial roles. But she is making money with these so maybe they feel if it isn't broke don't fix it.

I liked it. It's pretty much what I expected out of a new resident evil movie.
You kind of have to expect these movies to be over the top and have kind of a lame plot. Cheesey acting sometimes. Ali Larter was a totally shitty actress in it.
But I really enjoyed it. Wesker was awesome. I think Milla is a pretty good action chick. Wentworth Miller was a nice touch. Nice looking action scenes. I didn't see it in 3D, but I think it would have been pretty good 3D had I.

Being as she's married to Paul W.S. Anderson, I don't think she cares. The movies are an easy paycheck for both of them.

Yeah, I knew she was married to the director and the comment about it not being broke was referencing the easy money. I'd still like to see her do other roles and I don't want to see there be like ten Resident Evil movies, unless of course they can tell a good story. And by judging by this movie they can't.

Random question, does anyone know the details about the giant guy with the big ass axe that wouldn't die without that weird coin gun Alice had? My friend said they were a somewhat major part of RE 5, but seeing as I haven't played them... I'm quite interested still.
EDIT: Just learned they're called Executioners. Interesting.

Yeah, they are in Resident Evil 5 and there are others like them with similar characteristics in Resident Evil 4.

They're not really important as they only appear once in the main game. They are the first "boss type" character you face, though. (I mean like chainsaw and minigun zombies)

There are those blind guys with the Wolverine style claws in Resident Evil 4 that pop up on a couple occasions.

Yeah, like them. I mean they're not as weak as a normal zombie, but not as strong as a chapter boss.

Hm. Ah well.
That big ass axe is pretty intimidating, though.

Ah the Resident Evil movie franchise... were the main protaganist is a woman called Alice who wasn't in the game.
I've only seen the first two movies but they are all sort of meh. Obviously they can't really follow the games plotlines or what happens since it's pretty much running around, backtracking and solving puzzles but you at least you would do something sort of similar to the game.
That Red Queen shit in the first one was just stupid and the Alice character is totally unneeded.
I could come up with a better plot right now:
Movie starts off with either Chris and Jill in the S.T.A.R.S office in the RCPD receiving message about killings in the Arklay mountains and the disappearence of Bravo team. They are sent to investigate the Spencer Mansion by their commander Wesker. Brad pisses off when they arrive and they are left trapped at the mansion site. They explore the mansion, see the zombies, then they have to fight the zombies off *cue many action scenes of attempting to survive in the mansion*. They find Wesker who is revealed to be apart of this all along, find out about T-Virus and then the Tyrant is released who stalks them around the mansion. They then kill it off and attempt to battle wesker who escapes as the mansion is set to blow up or something and they escape when Brad returns.
There we go - it closely follows the game and is a doable plot. Why was that so hard? It even sets it up for the next movie.
It's not difficult to follow for people who have never played the games or anything and it's familiar to people who have played the game. You could argue that this would not make a good movie for people who have played the game before cause it follows so closely but even still, Star Wars Episode 3 was a decent movie and it was common knowledge that Anakin would become Darth Vader.
At the end of the day it just seems that the actual RE movie franchise just seems to continue to milk it by throwing in characters who should have been included a long time ago.

^ This. I was so pissed when it literally had nothing to do with RE except the dogs zombie licker and T-virus/Nemesis. I didn't really see the trailer except for her kicking a dog, and when it started in the mansion I was stoked. Then it got stupid really fast.

The problem with doing a straight Resident Evil adaptation was that the original game relied heavily on plot twists. In a straight adaptation, the plot twists would be ineffective if you'd already played the game. Conversely, if you'd seen the movie, then the game would be spoiled for you.

I'm pretty sure they weren't worried to much about the game being spoiled by seeing the movie. However I didn't really watch that mockery of a movie and go wow, I didn't see that coming. I would have much rather had something a little more cohesive with the original. This movie series might actually catch less shit if they never put the name Resident Evil in the title.

Video game adaptations can never be good, nor can live action adaptations of cartoons. You know why? Because they're the same basic presentations, audio combined with motion.
There's nothing a movie can offer that the video game didn't already, especially since most new video games are movies within themselves.

Resident Evil: Degeneration was exactly the type of film I was looking for. Just turn it into a Live action and you got what this series of films should've been.

I agree, Regeneration was the only good one out of the bunch, including the new one. The ten-fifteen minutes of 90's-esque action in the beginning of the movie were a set up for snoozery, although I have to admit, the guy who played Wesker was good.
