Geez… and I thought all those direct-to-video DC animated movies were doing great.
Bruce Timm recently told ThinkMcFlyThink.com that a number of such projects have been canceled due to the under-performance of GREEN LANTERN: FIRST FLIGHT and the WONDER WOMAN movie. The latter’s performance was so underwhelming, in fact, that DC Animated has sworn off doing any superheroine features for the foreseeable future. They were actually planning to do an adaptation of BATGIRL: YEAR ONE, but that project’s been canceled, now. The DVDs proved to be successful eventually, matching the sales of NEW FRONTIER, but they took so long to reach those levels that WB’s corporate people don’t believe that sequels are warranted. Timm still hopes that the potential blockbuster performance of the GREEN LANTERN movie might call for more toon adventures of the Ring Slinger.
Another project that’s been canceled is the adaptation of the “Judas Contract” storyline from TEEN TITANS. It was one of the first of these projects to be announced, a couple years ago now, and I believe it was to have Marv Wolfman and George Perez involved in some capacity. I don’t remember when or if an AQUAMAN feature was announced, but Timm has said that’s been canceled, as well. He also said that the DC animated staff isn’t interested in doing adaptations of Jeph Loeb’s HUSH and THE LONG HALLOWEEN storylines because they’re far too complex to boil down into shorter features.
I’d interject that fans have already gotten a feature-length, live-action adaptation of THE LONG HALLOWEEN with THE DARK KNIGHT, which cherry picked plot elements from that series along with the KILLING JOKE.
So that’s seven possible projects shot down. The only one Timm thinks might be a possibility, right now, is a return to BATMAN BEYOND. However, he stresses that such a project is a long way off if it’ll ever happen. |
Seriously this sucks. I've watched and enjoyed every single one of them with the exception of Wonder Woman (and that's simply tfrom not having the means at the moment).

I don't think a Batgirl movie is going to be that missed.

So shitty. The Wonder Woman movie was fantastic, and since DC has apparently decided that she's not good enough for a live-action movie, I was really looking forward to more of these.
Green Lantern is a shame too, but as least we've got what promises to be a damn good live version coming soon-ish.

What might suck is if Ryan Reynolds drops out of the Deadpool project because of the Green Lantern movie.

Think about the target audiences for these movies. Usually people like us. And what do many people all over this site do? Illegally download (STEAL) movies. If people don't pay for movies then the studios don't make a profit, which means they won't invest in future projects.
I'm not saying everyone in here steals movies, so no need to post how you don't do it. I've never done it myself because I don't want the movie industry to go the same way music did. I want the studios to still see a reason to invest into large, epic movies...or even smaller ones like these animated films. Stolen music severely stifles artists ability to even break even on a record, and the same could happen to the movie industry. If you steal movies, don't be pissed when projects like this are cancelled.
I'm not saying this is why every movie fails, but it does do a lot of damage to certain movies. Animated superhero movies have a small enough potential audience, so when a large portion of that audience doesn't pay for the product it can be devastating.
Ok, off my soapbox.

It still pisses me off to no end that freaking ELEKTRA got a live action movie before Wonder Woman. What the hell is THAT shit?
Also: A lot of people on the forums steal movies? Really? Isn't that what Netflix is for?

I've never stolen movies, I did stream wrestling a few times a while back...only because "Great American Bash" wasn't worth the $49.99.

The green lantern movie was good. Not sure why it underperformed.

For all that's worth, that could be as far as they made it.

It's very common to splice together a trailer with finished shots, even if only a fraction of the movie is completed. It's possible that they have finished the key scenes to this movie and put together a trailer to get an advance interest, and then the plug was pulled.

My mistake, I was confusing Hush/Long Halloween with Under the Red Hood. I'm hoping the Batman Beyond still takes hold.

From mtv.com of all places...
Back in October, rumors emerged that a direct sequel to "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies" was in the works, following the quick success that film achieved last fall. And it now appears that the rumors were true.
Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has officially announced that "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" will be released in September. The film will feature Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly back once again in their iconic roles as Batman and Superman, respectively.
According to TV Guide, Summer Glau ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") will portray Supergirl within the film.
"Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" will be directly adapted from "The Supergirl From Krypton," by Jeph Loeb and the late Michael Turner, which first appeared within the pages of "Superman/Batman" in 2004. In the story, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman mentor Supergirl after she arrives on Earth during a Kryptonite meteor shower, before she is abducted and brainwashed by Darkseid into becoming the new leader of his Female Furies.
Superman Homepage received the first scan of the cover, which you can see in the link here: http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/06/28/supermanbatman-apocalypse-confirmed-as-next-dc-animated-film-cover-art-revealed/
While the first "Superman/Batman" film was heavily influenced by the style of Ed McGuinness, it's currently unknown if this film will take it's cue from Turner. However, the box art and screencap from TV Guide seem to suggest that it will differ significantly from its predecessor.
The film will also come with a "Green Arrow" animated short, which was hinted at back in February. Producer Bruce Timm has previously indicated that "Green Arrow" was once under consideration for a full-length animated feature and may still have its shot, if the reaction to the short is strong.

Also, Mark Hamill is retiring as the Joker for good:
1up.com wrote: |
Mark Hamill, known as both Luke Skywalker and one of the most revered voices of the Joker, says he'll be hanging up his acid-squirting flower after completing Batman: Arkham Asylum 2. In an IGN interview, the veteran actor says he was reluctant to return to the role for the original Arkham, and even more so for its sequel. "This will be my last, there's no question about that," he said. "But it's the last hurrah."
Hamill says his original reluctance was due to feeling he had "left the role on a high note" after the cartoon series. "But they said, 'We got Paul Dini,' who was my favorite ever Joker writer, 'and Kevin Conroy,' who I love. This was a real reunion and a very pleasant experience. So of course I relented, but I had no idea it would have the impact it did." He says he was similarly hesitant to sign on for a second game, feeling they couldn't top the original. He changed his mind when Rocksteady told him what they had in mind for the character in the sequel. "But I'm sworn to secrecy!" he claims.
The finality of the statement has led to speculation that Joker will die in this sequel, which is supported by what we've seen. The teaser trailer showed a sickly Joker, giving a hacking cough between his cackles. We'll have to see how Rocksteady intends to make this his final joke. |
