Excuse me for not being optimistic but they basically did absolutely nothing. They got 16000+ people who were HIV Negative, gave half a "Vaccine" and the other half a placebo. 74 got AIDS in the placebo group and 51 got AIDS in the Vaccine group. 23 people out of 8200 could have very easily been partners or shared an infected partner during this study. These numbers are to miniscule to warrant any kind of outstanding success.

Unless the stipulations of this experiment were to "Fuck everything that moves" or "Have sex with an HIV infected person" this means jack shit to me.

Agreed, if these people were free to live as they pleased then the results are very underwhelming considering the chance for error. If you really wanna test that bitch, give half the people the vaccine, then give them all HIV...then you'll get some answers...and alot of HIV, but ANSWERS!

I hear you D. But given the big fat goose egg they've laid for all the years they've been trying to do something--anything--about AIDS, its certainly much better news than we've had in a while. Progress, however small, is still progress. And I good thing I think.

While I want to be optimistic about this there is no saying that this didn't just happened by coincidence. This "Vaccine" may do absolutely nothing to prevent HIV. It may help substantially...who knows. What they really need to worry about is a cure and not a preventitive measure to it. Especially not a Vaccine that doesn't effectively show any results other than X>Y.

I'm more cautiously optimistic, but hell, it's a stepping stone to at least eliminating down the line. Hell, it at least gives hope, and may encourage more investment in the cause.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

we all know there is no money to be made in the cure. its about the treatment and prolonging of the disease

I wouldn't say there's been no progress until this point. AIDS is no longer the death sentence it was 15 years ago, and now HIV doesn't even necessarily have to lead to AIDS, because of medical advancements in treating it. Hell, Magic Johnson is still going strong after having HIV for how long now? Is he really magic? No, he's been treated all this time by experimental cocktails and treatments.

While an AIDS vaccine is great, I think more needs to be made of the recent breakthrough in the HPV vaccine that'll innoculate millions of women from genital warts, and thus the almost guaranteed cervical/anal cancer that comes with it (it would have saved Farrah). AIDS is pretty small potatoes compared to what is essentially a cancer vaccine for a fairly prevalent STD. But no one seems to care about that one.

from what i understand, magic johnson is down to 1 AID. (family guy joke)

at any rate, he might actually be completely cured. like that south park episode pointed out, money is the cure. why is he still going strong? cause he has the money to keep going. to buy the 'cure' or 'treatment'

Whenever I hear news like this, it makes me really happy to know that there are such smart people out there who are hard at work on this kind of stuff.

The people who are out there inventing cures for diseases, electric cars, helping the blind to see, etc......I love them all. Keep going! Do it!

Yeah well genital warts never got a very special episode of Captain Planet.

Stopping a cancer is nice and all, but the fact of the matter is that AIDS was the big bogeyman of the 1980s and 90s real danger be damned, so seeing it on the way to being cured is a big event like seeing Saddam Hussein yanked out of a hole and put on trial.

I'm tempted to pull a random texture from Doom and put a summary of the news article to that music.

Having a grandmother with this and a mother with another degenerative brain disease I have to agree.

@Greg the White

That made me laugh. Thank you.

I wanted to somehow make a post tying the AIDS vaccine into the storyline of ultimate alliance 2 with the whole nanite collective and the fold and whatnot, but it really just boiled down to an excuse to post a picture of robofury, so I'll just post the picture and not bother with all of the bullshit.
