I was wondering if any games exist that use the following mechanics:

1. Each player is randomly paired with an unknown partner. Usernames are masked.
2. Communication between the players is not allowed.
3. The player pairs must cooperate to solve increasingly difficult, semi-randomized puzzles.

I think it would be an interesting idea. How do you work cooperatively with someone you don't know and can't communicate with? How do you get them to help you advance to the next room when they don't understand the puzzle and you do?

I don't think zero communication would work. Nobody's a mind reader, especially not through the internet.

Well, the puzzles would be set up in such a way that you would see your partner's onscreen avatar at all times.

the PS2 online resident evil was kind of like that. there was no voice chat at all, but your on screen guy would have preset messages or something.

The closest thing I know of is gwap. There are seven games that involve a simple puzzle and most of them have you paired with another player randomly. They're more about matching the other player's answer than being right. You don't see each other's progress until you're both done, at which point your results are compared. And you never see their identity.

I think this is the premise of the Saw movies.

Hey, I'm back.
Also, another user that used to frequent this forum (adrock4) asked me long ago about an interesting game idea, appropiately stolen from Saw... or inspired.
Basically, in the movie a blind guy and a mute guy have to work together.
And he thought of an online game in which you are paired randomly with a stranger, and both of you lack some senses, and have to work together.
Since this is a videogame, smell, tact and taste are completely out of the question, leaving visuals and sound to work on. One could use voice talk while the other can't, one of them could be deaf while the other is not, etc.
I thought it was cool, but alas, I don't know if a game like this exists.
LET'S MAKE IT OURSELVES

Knightmare is similar to that. The player in the game world is looking at a green screen and thus can't hear or see anything that mission control can back in the studio, making him effectively blind and deaf.
