Well, it changes some things from the original, and he only made it up to the first boss, but its still WELL worth your time. Check it out:

This game makes me very angry. I can not jump in first 3D worlds to save my life, but getting that damn heart piece would make this game so much easier. Fuck that last platform, seriously.

What is that plugin? I've never heard of it before, any word on if it is a secure one?

While I'm impressed that actual 3D is possible on such a limited platform, I didn't like how the mouse was far too sensitive and there isn't any indication of where the boundaries are in random encounter fields. It's a nice idea but it needs work.

GP, the plugin looks legit. I had concerns myself, but wiki has an entry on it (mostly on the engine, but it mentions the plugin too):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_%28game_engine%29
I also scanned it with my antivirus, and found no problems. I think you're clear.

Well, I agree on that. But since its more of a fun experiment than a straight up gaming experience, I was willing to let it go.
The mouse sensitivity did bug me, though.

I did end up installing it. I have a mouse that has sensitivity changes on the fly, so that problem was solved. The fields are ok I guess. I guess I just think they picked the wrong Zelda game to make 3D.

The screens look cool. Too lazy to play it. Video?
Also:

| I don't want to put cactuses in this area because the Saguaro cactuses depicted in the original game are a stereotype of american western deserts and shouldn't be in a desert like this. This is a personal protest against incorrect facts. In Banjo-Kazooie the desert level had the wrong type of cactus for an egyptian desert. They obviously did no research or even bothered to google a picture of what a real desert looks like. |
Holy fuck, kids today are retarded. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he didn't imply that the Zelda 2 team should have Googled deserts in order to design proper cacti for them. I'm pretty sure he was only referring to Banjo Kazooie in this regard. But still. Banjo Kazooie was released in 1998. The internet has grown exponentially since then. In 1998, most people were still on dial-up, sites used as few images as possible, and non-commercial sites that weren't fucking Geocities pages were a rarity. You couldn't just Google any old thing back then and find relevant information. Back then, you were much better off using actual books for research.
Also, Hyrule is a fantasy world. They can put whatever fucking cacti they want in their deserts.

Those friggin fire-shooting scorpions are nothing but a stereotype of deserts too. Those only exist in the deserts of northern Kyrgyzstan. He should leave them out too.

I'm just going to go on record saying that a first person Zelda game is in general a terrible idea, but this one proves to be an exception.

Does anyone else have a problem with how slow the character moves? Or am I just playing too much Scout?

I hate his reasoning for not using towns.

Making a large area with buildings populated by people that just walk around and have nothing to say, didn't seem like fun. So because I don't have infinite time and have to omit as much as I can, the towns never got made. |
They do have things to say, damnit!
Besides, that was always a big part of the experience. At least for me.

The dude that made this is a douche ball. He's basically remaking one of my favorite NES games and taking out a shit load of iconic things about the game. He's making "Zelda II : If Billy Bob Made It" and it's lame.
I'm also assuming his name is Billy Bob.

Yeah, the towns were one of the coolest parts about the game. The first game is a very lonely experience. You wander around in the wilderness, occasionally hobnobbing with shysters and elderly hermits. The Hyrule in Zelda 2 felt like a real kingdom, and saving it somehow felt more important.

I enjoyed his slimmed down, toned down version of the game in 3D. I wish he had gone al the way to make it as close to the original as possible though, including the towns.

I really enjoyed his rendering of the random battle zones, although it got kind of annoying how you couldn't see anything at all in caves without the candle (if I recall correctly, in the original Zelda 2, you could still see the floor and ceiling without the candle).

This. Why is he complaining about the presence of a certain cactus in a fictional desert?

Yes. And you could see the feet of enemies as they moved along the floor. But you could not see fucking bats.
