Recently, some posts in the Feedback section have brought to light a question that has been raging in my mind for years. Namely, which Shoto to use in Street Figher. I'm an Akuma fan normally, but I also use Ryu and Ken. So I pose this question: Which Shoto do you prefer?

I hate all shotos. I think they're cheap and annoying, and I hate how every street fighter character is either a shoto or an anti-shoto. Throwing fireballs and doing uppercuts is like fishing, only cheaper.
I like to kick a shoto's ass though. Pretty gratifying. So I guess I like them for that. If I'm forced to pick a Shoto, or I just want to for the hell of it, I'd go with Ken in third strike or Ryu V-ism in Alpha 3. That way I get to pretend I'm Daigo and I feel much cooler.
Furthermore, Dan isn't a shoto. I like to play as him too, am I an idiot

I've seen the animated street fighter movie, and the scenes with the main two are kinda gay.
Akuma's cool, but his face looks like he was hit with a shovel.
Sean and Dan are not really shotos. If I put them in a catagory, I would put them under "garcias" after the KoF character Dan was based off of. They lack the long range fireball that defines a shoto stratagy.
Sakura wins by default.
All in all I'm not much for the shotos. In street fighter I prefer the grapplers or weirdos.

Dan is actually my favorite of all those, and not because I'm a retard, retard. If you know how to use him, he's actually extremely powerful, and has super moves with names like "Certain Victory Relying On Nobody But Myself Fist" which are hilarious to yell once you connect to taunt your opponent.
Dan aside, I like Akuma the best because he's so fucking powerful, and because I'm really good at connecting with the Raging Demon, even though it has needlessly low priority for a 3 level super. His weakness of course is that he takes damage like a little bitch, so if you want to be able to take a hit, stay away from him. After him it goes Ken, then Ryu, and I don't care about Sakura cause she was too boring for me to bother playing at all. I know there was a heated discussion about it, but Ken really is better than Ryu. His dash is TERRIBLE, but his super moves are so much better, and his hurricane kicks are the shit.

i find ryu boring and basic. I always prefer ken over him.
I dont like akuma at all.
I voted sakura, i dont know why, but I like dan alot. no joke. I think I jsutiied this before.
sean is pretty nifty, and isnt really much of a shoto, besides wearing a karate gi.
how is every character anti shoto?

Easy JEW, because if you're playing against a Shoto your goal is to win, so you're clearly anti-Shoto. There are on characters in the game who will simply hug and be friends.

Examples of anti-shoto characters, characters designed specifically around countering shoto moves are all over steret fighter.
This is by no means a complete listing of all of the moves and characters, but here's a rough idea of some of the stuff that's readily apparent: Guy's backspin elbow, dodges fireballs and hits them when they try to toss one. The bushin flip does the same, but is riskier and goes over the top. The flash kick is to nail people after a failed shoryuken that missed, same with a lot of the supers in the games. Wrestler characters have to take the defensive and play a reactive role against shotos since shotos basically control the ground and air. The whole game is centered around countering the shoto guys, and making moves that balance theirs out.
Fights get a lot more interesting when nobody picks a shoto. Karin vs. Guy, for example, is a great fight. I for one would like to see a street fighter type game without any projectiles or flaming uppercuts, but with real martial arts combat. It'd be cool if, for example, they had an actual muay thai fighter instead of Sagat.

Actually, in third strike because both the haudoken and the shoryuken hit but once and quite predictably its entirely possible to parry them. Now ex projectiles present a problem, but there is a limit to how many they get. But yeah, non shoto's are more interesting to me.
And it seems sean has all of the power of dan and all the personality of ryu. Ouch.

I still dont see how not beign a shto automatically makes you an anti shoto. karen is anti shoto? dhalsim is anti shoto? how the fuck is Q anti shoto?
you make it sound liek the only guys that throw projectiles in the game are shotos, and everyone else has moves to counter them. would that make m. bison in alpha a shoto? he has a projectile. would that make dhalsim a shoto?
or is it simply having both an anti air and a projectile make you a shoto? wouldnt that make guile and charlie shotos? or is it because tehy have to charge that lmits their shotoability? chun li could be a shoto perhaps. why wasn't sagat put down as a shoto?
I've never considered a flash kick an anti shoto move. I always look at it as a way to finish some combos, or as an anti air in some occasions.

Since the last version of Street Fighter I've played is Super Street Fighter II Turbo for the SNES, I know nothing of this Shoto business nor half of the listed characters. If I did play anything beyond SSTIIT, I would use Ryu as he's who I usually use on the older games. Ken is just too flashy for my tastes. Akuma is cool, but I know little about him... as for the others... no clue. I'm actually surprised I checked this thread because I had no idea what this was about as per the title.

No Shoto for me. Chun-Li and Cammy are my girls!
So, are they anti-shoto, because Chun-Li has a triple upward kick to counter uppercuts and a short range fireball to block other projectiles?
And Cammy too, because she has the spinning fist that can parry fireballs...
I don't get it.
The games are made so the fighters are as ballanced as possible, but still give a varity of styles and tastes.

sonsidering all of the rediculous stuff he can manage to kick your ass with in that game, im fine with him taking extra damage. its not like akuma in mvc2 who loes half a lifebar frm eating a shinku hadouken.
svc chaos is an odd game. some guys love it and others swear death on it.
