mine would probably be Dragon Warrior 3. i havent played many RPG's in a while, but that one always held up with me.

Dragon Warrior III, Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard, the Pokemon Series, PSO games, and pretty much any Tales of game fill my top RPGs of all time, though they aren't all straight RPG.

Gotten second Dragon Warrior III. And then, Crystalis. Maybe Crystalis first, actually.
Oh, and every SNES RPG ever.

I'm not really an RPG guy, so I'll have to go with Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. I think I liked it more than the original, but they're both pretty great. I'm sure hoping for another one!

Hmmm. Rough. The 'best' overall to me would have to be Chrono Trigger or FF VI, I think. Both are about as close to perfection as anything can get.
For characters though, it would have to be FF IX. I care more about each of them than I have for any other game characters, ever.
Personal favorite will always be FF X, though. Its not the best or most well designed, the story's not unique and some of the characters are annoying, but I love it all the same. Its epic quest and LOtR style journey, not to mention its spectacular world and art design, will always give it a place in my heart.

I don't think I've played many bad RPGs. Except Tales of Legendia. Ugh.

If I can't consider Faxanadu a RPG (it's more of an action/RPG) I guess I will go with Dragon Warrior III or Final Fantasy IV.

Super Paper Mario, released for the Wii in 2007.
No, that's not my favorite, I'm just letting him know it exists because, for some reason, someone has to.

What a fantastic game, unfortunately it is not an RPG.
I hate how cliche it is, but I would have to say Chrono Trigger. Everything about that game remains unrivaled to me (except of course the graphics, although I am a big fan of the game's look, kudos Toriyama.) I have for sure put more time into it than any other RPG, I new game +'ed like 100 times.

Destiny of an Emperor, Crystalis, FFV & VI. And yes, I second Chrono Trigger. Never played Dragon Warrior III though. Probably because I hated the first one so much I never bothered with any of the sequels.

To a feeb like me, I do notice a major difference with WRPG's and JRPG's, so I'm gonna separate the two.
JRPG: Skies of Arcadia. A crapload of interesting characters, a unique world/setting, exploration, and cool air battle system. I play it over and over and never get tired
WRPG: Fallout 3. It's challenging, action-oriented, and creates a vast world that rewards exploration while providing an incredible atmosphere.

Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, despite never being able to beat it. Just kind of wish they made a D&D game like this that didn't have stupid bone weapons.

Chrono Trigger for sure. FFIX comes a close second with the Golden Sun games getting honorable mentions.

I don't really play a lot of RPG's anymore. FFIX tops my list. Lunar 2 was great too, the characters and the dialog were the best part.

Earthbound for the SNES is easily my favorite, if not my favorite game ever. The gameplay isn't anything to write home about, but the setting/story/etc... is what does it for me. For 2nd place, I'd probably say Super Mario RPG.

Yeah, I've beaten that. It has some of the same characters, but it's not the same type of game...more of a platformer with sidequests...

Super Paper Mario sucked. I mean it sucked for what it was supposed to be, but it turned out being such an easy game that I beat it in a little over a day.
Speaking of easy, I gotta say my favorite RPG is Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars. Not only did it introduce me to RPGs, but this game was so much fun and so much different than the other Mario games at that time. I'm still disapointed we've never seen the returns of Prince Mallow, Geno, Booster, or Jonathon "Johnny" Jones.
