FRAPS can't record NES emulators for some reason, so I thought I'd ask you guys. I'm putting on an NES challenges thing of my own on another forum, and my players can't find programs for recording (some of them can.)

VirtuaNES records. Use it.
If you want to screen capture, I used CamStudio to record my netplays, and it worked well.

With a DOS-based emulator, you could record via DOSBox

I tried that solution once. It didn't turn out so well.

no he's totally right! You can do that and recompile them in windows movie maker by setting each picture to .005 seconds long. It's been done.

HyperCam is the only one that works for me, so that's what I'll recommend...
Note that it can't record in stereo and that it starts desynching after about 15 minutes.
There's a way around that, but it involves using Sound Recorder at the same time as HyperCam, have VirtualDub join the two files and then delay the audio/video so they're synched.

Um, same way it did anything else. It worked fine. With...um, VirtuaNES.

It might depend on the Emulator, as Fraps seems to be picky about the programs it chooses. Also, make sure you try both full screen and windowed, as sometimes Fraps will detect one mode but not the other (for me, it'll detect ZSNES in Fullscreen but not Windowed). However, I have had Fraps detect and record from Nestopia without problems.

How do you record with Fraps at over 5 FPS? And how do you avoid having videos where the only sound is that snowy background noise you get when your TV gets no signal?

The emulator has to use DirectX for FRAPS to like it. I can normally pull decent quality off, though.
