600 museums offer military families free admission

WASHINGTON (AP) - More than 600 museums nationwide are offering free admission to military families all summer in a new partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

The list includes some of the nation's premier art museums, including New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as science centers, children's museums and other sites in all 50 states.

The program, called Blue Star Museums, is being announced Monday in San Diego, where 14 museums will participate. The offer for active duty military personnel and their families runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

It was the brainchild of Kathy Roth-Douquet, chairwoman of the group Blue Star Families. Her husband, Marine Corps Col. Greg Douquet, is on his third deployment to Afghanistan.

"You can feel a little alone in America right now, being part of the 1 percent that's involved in fighting these wars," she said, adding that the recession has changed priorities for many people. "When the kids and I go to museums this summer, we know we're being welcomed. It will make us feel less alone."

Roth-Douquet, who lives in Parris Island, S.C., said military bases are sometimes far from cultural centers, though museums can be a good escape.

The Defense Department is helping to promote the offer, and Roth-Douquet said some military bases may coordinate bus trips.

When her family was based in London for a time, she and her son and daughter spent an entire summer visiting museums because many were free. As a result, she said, her 8-year-old son Charlie now draws for hours each day.

This summer, they're planning a road trip along the East Coast to visit museums. Normally, a $20 ticket to MoMA in New York might rule it out, she said. Now they could also stop for free at Washington's Corcoran Gallery of Art or New York's Jewish Museum.

NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman said he was surprised by how many museums joined the effort, despite the poor economy, from the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum to the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Nebraska.

"I think it is good karma for the museums," he said. "Long-term, it promotes museum-going and engagement with the arts."

Also, over Memorial Day weekend in New York City, Sen. Kristen Gillibrand has announced more than 50 museums and historic sites will offer free admission to military personnel and veterans.

Not that I'll actually visit a museum any time soon, but does this only affect families who have family members currently in the military, or families with people who once served?

And I don't mean grandparents who served in WW2 I mean actual direct family

Well it says Veterans, which means anyone who was on active duty at some point. So as long as said family member has some sort of Vet ID or proof, I assume they're good for it too.

heh my dad just tore through box after box of old stuff trying to find his old military ID

If we really wanted to go though I am sure a copy of the certificates he received for being stationed at checkpoint 89 of the Berlin Wall would suffice

Sea World in FL and CA, along with Busch Gardens in FL and VA give free Admission for Active duty once a year, also they can bring up to 4 guests with them for free. Being stationed in FL I usually cash in once a year.

While your joking, I do personally feel a lot of people in the Military get much more credit than they deserve. Don't get me twisted, I'm not talking about the Guys and Girls in the Sandbox right now, or have been in it. But more of the folks who put the uniform on, then find every excuse in the world to get out of deployments, then walk around with their chest puffed out acting like they just saved the world.

Another one that really really really pisses me off, are the Military folks that go out and buy a shit ton of medals they didn't earn and wear them back home to appear as that war hero.

Fucking Cowards.

My brother in law is in the Coast Guard. So my sister and her kids get all sorts of perks, which my dad insisted for me to try for, which would be cool, if I was down for that sort of thing, but honestly I'm not.

And I know where you're coming from Atma, because without trying to sound like a raging asshole, I know a LOT of people who were in the armed forces who are arrogant, selfish assholes. They basically walk around like they're untouchable and will not hesitate to pick fights or anything of that magnitude. Now I know it's not all people, and probably a select few, but damn do I see it more here than anywhere else. I also have a close friend who married this guy before he was deployed, turned out he was a serious asshole over there and cheated on her and even divorced her because he wanted to fuck everything in his path, and I find it amazing he wasn't discharged for some things he did, and honestly I think there should be harsher punishments for some of these cocky assholes who give the uniform a bad name.

And your right, its not all of them. But as in any situation, a bad apple ruins it for everyone. There are some many Navy Assholes in Jacksonville, when I was single, it you couldn't even tell a girl you were a part of the Navy or they Imediately assumed you were going to cheat on them, or beat them or some kind of crazy shit. I can't stand the people in the Military who are just Bloodthirsty looking for that fight. But eh, it doesn't matter where you go. You'll always find an asshole or three.
