So has anyone ever played Chessmaster? (I'm specifically referring to the PS2 version since that's the one I have, but I understand its on a few different platforms.)
If you like Chess at all, this is a must-own. Not only does it have really good opponent AI, its got an entire Chess school that will walk you through everything from the absolute ground level of the game (the rules, how the pieces move, etc) to the most advanced tournament strategies. Additional awesomeness includes a library of literally hundreds of famous games that you can watch play out move by move, a challenge mode, and all sorts of cool stuff. Highly recommended, especially since you can probably find it in a bargain bin for super cheap.

I have Chessmaster on SNES. I like it a lot, but it's just a plain old chess game. Actually, there are pretty decent chess games in Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix on the Wii...
Sometimes I go online and play on Yahoo, but I usually get annihilated because I think pros hang out in the novice/medium level rooms.

we used to have one for the xbox. the old xbox. and one of the AI opponents was a monkey. the monkey would randomly make stupid moves or just eat the pieces. fun times

The Chessmaster series is great. The whole Chess Encyclopedia thing is awesome. Last one I tried was Chessmaster X on PC. The thing that helped me the most was the chess puzzles. After a while, I started to recognize the patterns naturally when playing against other people.
For anyone who likes chess, I'd say it's a must buy, especially since you can find it for $10 or so.

The Chessmaster wizard is one of the symbols of gaming from my childhood. Chessmaster 2000 was one of my first computer games.

I used Chessmaster for PS2 quite a bit back in the day. Actually, my friend and I pitted my PS2 Chessmaster against his Chessmaster 5000 for PC. Some of the games went on 100+ moves. I don't remember the exact results, but 5000 won. Now I use the Grandmaster Edition of X or XI ( I forget) for the PC.

Chessmaster 2000 is the only Chessmaster game I have ever played and owned... having it on my Windows 3.1 OS on my Hewitt-Packard Bell computer, I just had so much for with it!

I had Chessmaster (don't know what version) back in the late 80's on the very first computer I owned, a x286 with a whopping 20MB hard drive. I actually learned how to play chess through the game. Good times.

I once taught a six-year-old how to play chess with the lessons I learned from 2000. I still haven't beat any computer at chess myself, though.
