He should have gotten it sold by escrow or conducted the transaction in a public space like Craigslist recommends. Like the detective said, he should have known better than to trust someone to buy something so valuable in private without holding him up.

So the lesson to be learned here is:
If you are going to sell something on Craigslist that is worth alot of money and could easily be fenced (such as jewery or high end electronics,) make the buyer meet you somewhere in public. Perferably, in front of your local courthouse or police station. If they refuse, then don't agree to sell it to them.
